David Booth was my children's literature professor at U of T in the late 1980's. He would bring in books and share them with us, many of which I later used with my own students. Years later, I was lucky enough to attend several of his workshops. Once again, he inspired his audience with his humour, kindness, and love of stories. He stressed the importance of reading to kids, and I've tried to make that part of my daily practice. I feel privileged to have had him as a mentor.

When at OISE in 1990, my faculty advisor Richard Courtney halted our conversation one day and said, "You need to meet David Booth!" He proceeded to set up a reading course with David for me - David was teaching at the Faculty of Ed. Soon after that I found myself at the Facutly of Ed. in David's class for a life-changing year. David's impact on my teaching career was monumental. I became the teacher with the extensive picture book collection who read aloud at every opportunity and lent quality children's literature to all staff members. As for his influence in the area of drama - again, he solidified my interests and understanding of the power of drama in education. His wit, passion, brilliant intellect, intuitive instincts and kindness will be greatly missed in a world that needs these like never before. The last time I spoke with him was just before my retirement in 2016. We discussed some projects centred around the creativity initiatives in the OCDSB. He mentioned that he was "getting old" - and I realized that the man who was totally committed to teaching and learning with extraordinary vitality, passion and love would (logically) grow old just like the rest of us! His legacy and influence will not. When I was his student in 1990 who told us many stories of Jay and how he learned and experienced literature and reading. What a fortunate, young boy I thought - and my children consequently received a childhood of rich literature and "snuggling up with books" modeled after stories of David and Jay. My late-arriving condolences to Jay and family.

David was keystone at the apex of my teaching education and career. As my witty B.Ed literacy teacher at O.I.S.E., author of numerous fun teaching resources and workshops that helped shape a dynamic programme, and as esteemed faculty advisor for my M.Ed., no one has encouraged or acknowledged my role as meaningfully as David. A teacher has blossomed with confidence and inspiration.
Thank you

David was the one that said "You Can Do That!" He made it possible for my students and I to put up permanent murals in the halls of O.I.S.E. in response to interviews we had with students and teachers there. David gave me the courage to push. He was always delightful, urbane, inspiring, thrilling, surprising. He was magic and that will live on in everyone he touched! Thank you David

In deepest sympathy, Jay, to you and your family for the loss of your father, David. He was a true friend and mentor to me over many years. I am very grateful for his presence in my life. I miss him and hope that his spirit is at peace, united with all those he loved and who loved him. He spoke often lovingly of you. May you be comforted and supported by his spirit and by friends and family now and always.

Dave was like a second parent to me (and others) during my teenage years growing up in the '60's in Hamilton. He was my teacher and life guide, exposed me to poetry, literature, drama and critical thinking. He rescued me more than once and steered me in the right direction. He is one of the most selfless and generous people I have known.

David was one of my favourite people. I'm finding it hard to put into words what a huge support and inspiration he was during my time at OISE and after. He changed the way I saw children's literature and education, and I hope to have even half the impact on the world that he had. He always made time to talk when I was going through the graduate program at OISE, and for years after he never failed to give me a reference letter after I graduated. He gave me so many opportunities for personal and professional development. He was a mentor and a friend and there will never be another like him.
To his family--David always spoke lovingly and proudly of you, and I hope it's a comfort to know that he made such a positive impact the lives and work of so many people like me.

Thank you David, for all that you have given each and every one of us, starting with your IMPRESSIONS series. You were the reason I attended the Pembroke Publishing days - my favourite table mate, as we discussed my hometown SARNIA. Thank you for all of your support in my new adventure in writing. I have all of your email responses saved, and will have your words in my heart as I strive to find the courage & discipline to write my story. God Bless. Swing with the Angels, Erika Power.

I first met David at the faculty of education ,University of Toronto, in 1975. He was an inspiration to me and I credit the direction of my teaching career to him. I have no idea what I would have done in my early drama teaching without a copy of Nobody in the Cast ! Thereafter his writings and publications were essential to my work and success.
Over the years I had many David experiences which enriched me and as a consultant invited David to speak on a number of occasions to inspire other teachers.
Thank you David Booth for your commitment to children and teachers over your career. Yours are the shoulders upon which I stood and others will stand as a consequence of your legacy.
Peace to your family and friends.

David was my PhD supervisor and also my colleague/supervisor when I taught part-time at OISE/UT in the late 1990s.
David was one of those rare people whose influence you find yourself reflecting on from time to time years later. His wonderful sense of humour and joy for life remains with me to this day.
I had the privilege of hearing David speak at two events a few years ago. The audiences for both were so appreciative of David's insights. David's books are a testament to his lasting influence on education.
I feel deeply privileged to have known David personally and as a colleague.

Oh David,
you "should have died hereafter". This was far too soon.
I am so sad and shocked at the loss of this wonderful, talented and funny man. At our National Drama conferences in the UK he was inspirational, loved and respected by all the delegates who worked with him or listened to his thought-provoking and hilarious keynote speeches which I still remember vividly. He was a master of witty repartee and I loved the ever-present twinkle in his eye. He left an amazing legacy of books, ideas and understanding but the world is a lesser place without his physical presence. He was such a good friend. I treasure his memory and am glad I have many photos of him from our conferences. I will miss his sparkle, his gentleness, his genius and his passion. It is truly awful to think I will never again see him or hear his droll sense of humour. R.I.P. dearest friend.

David Booth was a remarkable person. His being brought joy and love wherever he went, and his work enlightened so many people's work as well as mine and for that I will always be grateful. David's being brought peace and joy to each situation what a gift; what a person.
Dr. Booth is missed and will always be missed. He is one of those bright lights and will never be forgotten.
While it saddens me to know that David is no longer on this Earth with us, his positive energy and love persists ... and for that we can all be grateful
Booth family, I am so sorry for your loss.

22 December was my birthday. But I never know this news----
The OISE community mourns the loss of Professor David Booth who passed away on December 22, 2018. He was Professor Emeritus in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at OISE.
He was the only person in the OISE who replied my email and invited me to meet him. With his invitation, I first came into the OISE building. Before that I had been in distress and uncertainty for 3 years. He was the one who gave me mental shelter. He was the one who gave me two recommendation letters without knowing me, but with observing my resume. He also managed another recommendation letter for me from his friend. He was trying to find a supervisor for me, he introduced Prof. Sarfaraz to me. He was the only one who gave me two dollar for getting coffee refreshment. He was the only one who gave me many appointments to talk to him and without appointment he also talked me several times. He was the kind person who introduced me to Danny. I can write more..... I wish his peace, he taught us friendly kindness, he possessed big heart....

David was one of my favourite things about OISE. i can't even pinpoint how we "met"... like so many people, i think that i was just the very lucky recipient of his care, generosity of spirit, and genuine interest in other humans. every single time i bumped into David in the halls of CTL over the past 4 years, he stopped to talk and to listen: never once without his full attention and a kindness in spirt+actions that matched his words. David will be deeply missed by me. in his memory, i will take care to deepen the quality of connections i make with others throughout my days. he was (and remains) such a gift to the world.

As a teacher librarian I loved to share Dr. Booth's works with my students and learned so much from his workshops over the years. His passing is a loss to so many...family, friends and readers around the world.

Dear Jay and Family,
How saddened I was to hear this news. It doesn't seem real. Your father was on my doctoral committee since 2017, chosen because he got my work, supported it, allowing me to write the dissertation I wanted to. After the proposal meeting late 2017 he ran back and exclaimed how excited he was to be a part of my committee, and to see what I planned to do. But it wasn't until this last summer that I really got to know David how he shared his knowledge and expertise so freely and generously, how he advised me mentoring me, how he spoke so lovingly about you and your family, how lucky he felt coming back from a visit, that you are all such good people, how we laughed out loud, how he was always so available to me often meeting at the last minute. So grateful for his tireless input and assistance, I often said, David, I want to take you out for dinner. At our last meeting on November 28, I gave him an advent calendar, hugged him and said, I still wanna take you out for that dinner. And he replied, there's time let's do it when this is all over. I nodded. One regret is that he never got the chance to read my work that he was so supportive of. But I cherish the times I had with him especially over this last summer, getting the privilege to know this inspired and inspiring gentle soul who touched the hearts and changed the lives of many. I carry this inspiration within me..
Forever gracious
Forever generous
Forever joyful
David, I will miss seeing your smile, bumping into you at the elevator, sitting in your office, sharing a laugh...
David, I will never forget you. Thank you. Thank you for all you've given me..

David was an esteemed mentor - I'm sad our world has lost an important voice, a gracious gentleman with a generous heart. He was an inspirational professor, an invaluable colleague and my treasured friend. David's last message (December 3rd) to me: You are kind to remember me... and that's what made him extraordinary: his gratitude, his value of others, he was the archetype of the giver. He treated everyone with kindness, respect and believed that every student was a jewel, precious and shining. His gentle questions demonstrated his subtle genius and pulled out the best in others. I will miss his quiet presence. My only solace is imagining he still helps others but from a different place.
My sincere condolences to his dearly loved son Jay and his family, who he spoke of often, and to all his friends and colleagues who feel his loss so keenly. There are so many...

When I was offered the opportunity to illustrate David's collection of street rhymes, I was honoured of course. It was an extraordinary gift for an illustrator. David's choices were perfectly zany. He was one of the best authors I've ever had the privilege to collaborate with, giving me total freedom to allow my creativity to fly as high as it could. This was what he stood for as an educator of educators and as a person.
When we met, he was generous, modest and so kind. He will be missed by so many.

His legacy will be everlasting through his published works and the people who were lucky enough to hear him speak in person. I heard him several times at the National Reading Recovery Conference. His message about the importance of children seeing themselves in books (not just in pictures but also in the narrative itself) has changed the way I select texts for children. RIP

David Booth will be missed by thousands of educators and those who have had the honour of working with him over the decades. I attribute my long career in publishing to a few people, but David's vision and passion to ignite the love of literacy in children was a significant factor. Ah, my heart is heavy, and my eyes are puffy.
David was a force of nature but a gentle one, like a steady summer breeze. His multifarious accomplishments in the education realm are legendary. If you mention his name to any teacher, the response is usually David Booth? I love David Booth!
When I first went about assembling a board of directors for a non-profit I was putting together, I remembered an inspiring speaker whose lecture I had attended during teacher training, and whose career I had followed. That was David. I wished I could have someone with his expertise and passion for literacy on our board of directors. It was a lofty notion, but I recalled the warmth he exuded, which bucked up my courage to go and see him at his OISE office. I described what I was trying to accomplish, we mutually bonded by griping about the same unsolved literacy issues, and in the space of half an hour David was eagerly on board', so to speak. I walked out of there hardly able to believe my luck. But of course it wasn't luck. It was David's big heart, his humility, and his passion for helping every last child on the planet if only he could.
Our board meetings were always merry, thanks to David. He loved the shared goal of helping kids learn to read, not to mention the food and company. His wry and sometimes wicked sense of humour kept us laughing, and his ideas were always pragmatic and creative. He was an inspiring guy, a role model, someone who grew older gracefully, with the warmest and humblest of hearts.
My deepest condolences to David's family (his face lit up at any mention of you) and to his vast network of friends, colleagues, publishers and students. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by many, many people. That's a life well-lived.

Dear Jay you know better than anyone your father's boundless generosity; my eternal gratitude to have been swept up in his orbit. He taught me about drama, story, about teaching, academia and most importantly about loyalty and friendship. His love for you and your beautiful children is endless. My deepest condolences to you and your family as you grieve the passing of this beautiful man, father, grandfather and friend. My own life is infinitely richer for having known, and learned from, him. I miss him deeply.

Just as David honored his son Jay as his finest gift to the world, so we who were touched by David as friends, co-workers, and students, can celebrate that we are part of the legacy of that most accomplished of teachers, generous of friends and nurturing of human beings. Ave atque vale!

As many have already said, David was a gentle soul with great wisdom. I feel so blessed to have called him my mentor and friend. His legacy will continue through the lives of all of his students worldwide. He had an amazing gift of making everyone that spoke to him feel that they were special and the focus of his attention. Rest In Peace Professor, you will be dearly missed.

And the humour. Don't forget the sense of humour, the mischief in those eyes that laughed so slyly and made us laugh. Too soon, David, too soon.

As a student-teacher 18 years ago I will remember David's passion for teaching! I was hoping to meet up with David in February for The Love of Reading Conference to tell him how much he impacted my life in teaching! Sorry to hear of his passing! Sonia Roy (Natola)
