David HARRIS Obituary

HARRIS, David Alexander - August 9, 1946 - July 18, 2015 Cherished husband of Caroline and beloved and loving father of Mark. David was a dedicated Teacher, Coach and Mentor to many at Markham District High School for 30 years. He started the rugby program there, leading both boys and girls teams to numerous championships, as well as on tours overseas and was actively involved in the outdoor club. With a small group of enthusiasts, David founded the Markham Rugby Football Club in 1980 and served as president for many years. In recent years, he focused his efforts on serving his community by volunteering on a number of committees, as well as being active in the Orders and Medals Research Society. David was a fine man and will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends here and overseas. A celebration of his life will take place at 2 p.m. on August 6th at Oakview Terrace, 13256 Leslie St., Richmond Hill (www.oakviewterrace.com). Today, August 9, would have been David's 69th birthday, one day after my 72nd. Every year, for heaven knows how many years since we met in September 1967, we have found some way of exchanging a silly, humourous greeting. Wherever we were, on different continents or near our homes in Greater Toronto, a full pint glass of Arthur Guinness' was raised. David was my best friend and a metaphorical partner in crime. We shared humour, rugby, travel, traditional music, the outdoors and above all elements of risk that sated curiosity and tested mediocrity and complacency. It is not surprising that another shared interest, Irish culture, led us to our wedded life-mates from Ireland!
His passing is an immense shock. Since hearing of his sudden deterioration, precious shared moments have been flashing through my memory several times every day. Thank you for the many positive influences you have had on my life. Thank you for helping me reach some of my personal goals. Thank you for not being judgemental. Thank you, simply, for sharing so willingly.
Thank you, too, Caroline and Mark, for the wonderful "send-off" on Thursday. Bear with the loss and the ensuing grief, it will be tough, but the memories of David Harris, a fine human being, will endure.
A pint was raised today and the tradition and memory will continue as long as I'm able.
Bye-bye, friend.

Please accept my condolences. David was a true gentleman; a noble man who gave his time generously to his community. David will be missed greatly but remembered fondly, particularly by those in the rugby community.

Unfortunately Dave may not have known how much he helped an immigrant teenager adjust to a new life and to find new friends through high school and club rugby. A wonderful man, and excellent coach, and a great teacher.

I am very sad to hear of Dave's passing. I first met Dave when we played for the Barbs and then renewed our friendship when I coached Markham in the 90's. A great guy who worked very hard for Rugby. He is missed.

Mr Harris was one of the best teachers I had at MDHS in the 70s. His biology class was the best part of the day. He inspired me.
