DAVID JAY Obituary

JAY, DAVID ARTHUR It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved David, who died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on December 9, 2022. David was born in Kirkland Lake on August 19, 1952. He was the dedicated father of Alex and Emily (Kyle); doting granddad to Logan, Nathan, and Ava; devoted husband of Kathy; and loving big brother of Garth (Colleen) and Ian (Leesa) Jay. David is also survived by his very dear Aunt Evelyn (George), Uncle Don (Chris) and Uncle Dave (Marion). David was a good man. He loved deeply and lived his life in the service of those he held near and dear to his heart, humbly prioritizing their well-being and expending great effort ensuring they were cared for. David was also fiercely intellectual, reflective, and observant. A prolific note-taker highly motivated to gain a deeper understanding of the world, David privately produced volumes of notebooks filled with his observations, insights, questions, and poetry. Although he'd never admit it, David possessed almost encyclopedic knowledge on wide-ranging topics, such as languages, philosophy, history, politics, and literature, much to the delight of any trivia team fortunate enough to have him in their ranks. Throughout his life David loved spending time at the cottage at Moira Lake with his parents, brothers, cousins and the neighbours of "Minister's Row". David also always had an affinity for cars, motorcycles, and sailing. He had a great sense of humour, and loved a good New Yorker cartoon. While attending Victoria College, University of Toronto, David sang in the Hart House Choir and completed his BA in Philosophy in 1974. Upon graduation, David enjoyed a 20-year career at Loblaws, driving trucks initially but quickly transitioning to a Distribution/IT Manager and ultimately VP. David shared his IT expertise with companies across North America as an Arthur Anderson IT consultant and finally as an IT VP for the LCBO. Ultimately, David returned to his first career path, driving long distance trucks for Musket, until he retired at the end of 2021, at the age of 69. Although gone far too soon, David had a banner year, making the absolute most of his hard-earned yet short-lived retirement. David had the time of his life travelling to Cuba, taking a cruise across Europe with Kathy, an East Coast road trip with Ian and Garth, visiting New York with Kathy and Emily to attend Alex's Ph.D. commencement, and spending extra time with Emily, Kyle, Logan, Nathan, and Ava, whom he adored. To cap it all off, David finally got his Tesla. He enjoyed every minute of not only driving it but also buying all kinds of gadgets for it. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 7, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ First, United Church of Canada, 1700 Mazo Cres., Mississauga. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, EMS fire and paramedic personnel, and staff at Trillium Hospital, who worked tirelessly in caring for David and supporting the family in our time of need. In lieu of flowers, donations to Covenant House or Interim Place would be appreciated.

I have just uploaded two pictures. The first shows David and Kathy at the wedding of Kent Peacock and Sharon Simmers, June 28, 1986. The second shows Kent getting last-minute instructions from Doug, with David and our friend Prof Will Crichton in the background. Photos by Laurie Crew.
