DAVID MAIN Obituary

JUSTICE DAVID R. MAIN 1940 - 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Justice David R. Main. Justice Main is survived by Sylvia, his beloved wife of almost 49 years. He leaves behind his brother Glenn and wife Margaret and their families, and Sylvia's sisters, Joan Gregory and Phyllis Christopher and their families. Justice Main, son of the late Edna and Hugh Main, was born in Merritton, Ontario. David and Sylvia were married in 1962 and two years later David graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Toronto. Having been licensed to practice pharmacy in 1965, David entered law school, practicing pharmacy during the summers. In 1968, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto. He articled with James C. MacDonald of MacDonald & Ferrier, a practice restricted to Family Law. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1970 and the same year he and Sylvia travelled to New Zealand where David lectured at the University of Otago, Faculty of Law for a short time. After returning briefly to MacDonald & Ferrier, David opened his own Family Law practice in 1972. David was appointed to the Provincial Court (Family Division) in October 1975. Over the years Justice Main served on the Conciliation Board, Provincial Judges' Association (Family Division), the Canadian Bar Association and the Family Law Rules Committee. He was appointed permanent Chairman of the Faculty of Pharmacy Appeals Committee in 1980. Throughout his career he was a lecturer and panelist at various Family Law programs and at the Bar Admission Course. Justice Main retired in 2001 after serving 26 years on the Bench. Those years gave him great satisfaction. He loved interacting with people. His politeness, kindness, humour and attentiveness made him an asset. David and Sylvia enjoyed ten wonderful years of retirement, becoming involved in volunteer work, continuing education, travel and much more. Sincere thanks to all the medical staff at Toronto General Hospital, to the paramedics and to the police officer who drove Sylvia to the hospital. At Justice Main's request, there will be a private cremation. If you wish, a donation to the charity of your choice may be made in his memory.

Dear Mrs.Main,

I appeared before Judge Main while working as a probation officer between 1975-1995. I had the utmost respect for his Honour, along with my colleagues. He presided with regard for the youth, their families and the court staff.
He made rulings that not only reflected the law, but also with a view to having the best possible impact on the youth before him.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to you. I will remember Judge Main as a kind man with integrity, in dedicated service to the public and the young.

I am very saddened to hear of the death of David. I grew up with him in Merritton and have fond memories of our school days together. He was one of my best friends. Although we lost track of each other, I often thought about how he was doing. I knew he would have a happy and successful life. My sincere condolences to Sylvia & his brother Glenn and family.

We have many wonderful memories of time spent with Dave and Sylvia. Young peoples at Church in Port Dalhousie, times spent with them in Toronto. The wonderful, hilarious letters and birthday cards received from them as well.Granny Stokes, breakfast gatherings at Dave's parents house. Have tried calling several times in the past few years but were never able to find them home. Figured they were off travelling somewhere. How did we lose touch with close friends and wonderful people that were once such a big part of our lives? We wish you well Sylvia. The loss must be terrific for you. Please call. Much love,

I was dismayed to learn of David’s sudden passing. David was one of the kindest, gentlest men I have ever met. I have many fond memories of working with David when he was a young lawyer, and I was honoured when he asked me to help him open his first law practice. I had hoped to reconnect with David and Sylvia one day to reminisce about “the good old days”. Sylvia, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. David will be missed by all who knew him. With deepest sympathy,

It is with great saddness I read of Dave`s passing. Having been our best man at our wedding, I truly valued his friendship and companionship during our younger days. I have great memories of school, school fraternity and sports. Although sadly we lost contact, we often think of the Main`s and how you are doing. Sylvia, we wish you strength and all the best as I am know that Dave will be greatly missed.
