David Millar Obituary

DAVID MILLAR

April 5, 1930 - April 22, 2015

David Millar, artist, sailor, entrepreneur, volunteer, beloved husband, brother, cherished father and grandfather, completed his life's journey on April 22, 2015. Born in Toronto, Ontario, son of Thomas and Leola Millar, brother to Barry (Donna), Sandra (Donald) and Scott, deceased (Lynda).

Educated at Western Technical School and Ontario College of Art, David founded David Millar & Associates Ltd., a graphic design and print communications firm. As a teenager, David began building sailboats with his father and brothers in the backyard. This led to a lifelong passion for competitive sailing, first at the National Yacht Club and later at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. He built and raced Star boats, chasing the wind all over North America.

A gifted and accomplished watercolour artist, David was a founding owner/partner (2003) of Red Eye Gallery in the Historic Distillery District, Toronto. His paintings are held in private collections in Canada, England, Australia and the USA. His artwork was featured in the prestigious publication "American Artist". He left us a legacy of beautiful paintings that will always remind us of his creative spirit.

Predeceased by son Brian (2005) and forever loved by his wife Kathy, children Sue (Gunter), Laurie (John), Bruce (Barb), Jeff (Melissa) and James (Elissa) and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Robert). Cool Grandpa to Jennie, Luke, Eric, Megan, Kelly, Sydney, Alana and Oliver. Also remembered by Margaret Goddard. A kind and gentle man, friend to many.

A special thank you to Maria Acosta for her ongoing compassionate care for David. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please consider a donation to The Alzheimer Society of Toronto iPod Project or to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A commemorative celebration of David's life will be held at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road (east gate entrance), Toronto (416-485-5572) on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 11 a.m.

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Millar's passing. He was a very kind neighbour, and would come over at times to speak to me, if I was outside cutting my Mom's grass. One of the original people of Don Mills. Ah, the passage of time. Thinking of you.

Growing up beside Dave Millar and his family has such good memories for me as a child. I remember him building a boat in his basement and always wondering how he was going to get it out. I also remember that there was always artistic items around the house. My sister and I went and spent some weekends with them on Toronto Island. What fun we had spending so much time with the Millar family through most of our growing up years.

David had one of the kindest smiles I have ever seen. His eyes sparkled whenever speaking of his family, sailing, or art. Kathy and family, please accept my condolences. You are all in my thoughts.
