David PARSONS Obituary

PARSONS, David John Peacefully, on June 5, 2020, at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto, at the age of 80, following a lengthy illness which he faced with courage and grace. Loving husband of 56 years to Margaret (nee Harris), dear father to Shannon, (Richard Campitelli), Andrea and John. He was a devoted grandfather to Matthew and Gregory Campitelli; Tim (deceased), Jeffrey and Charlie Paik; and Nathan and Dashiell Parsons. Born 1940 near McIntyre Corners, Ontario, David taught school in East Garafraxa before going on to graduate from the University of Toronto, Bachelor of Music Education program, where he was Concertmaster of the Orchestra. During his career, he taught music at Burnhamthorpe, North Albion and Richview Collegiates for the Etobicoke Public School Board, retiring in 1995. He was music director for many high school musical productions throughout his teaching career. He was most proud of completing his Masters in Education from Brock University with honours. With retirement looming, Dave returned to the joy and camaraderie he felt performing with his violin, joining various pitbands for musicals throughout the west end of Toronto and in more classical settings with the East York Symphony and the Etobicoke Philharmonic. This love of performing in large and small ensembles continued on into his retirement. He sang with and was the assistant conductor of the Toronto Queensmen Male Chorus. He co-conducted the "Let There Be Music" Choir, a diverse group of elderly seniors who sang, socialized and presented two concerts a year. He was manager and participant of the "Eh Team", a small, but mighty group that brought music and laughter to challenged seniors. He was an active member of the Toronto Choristers together with his wife Marg. Dave was known for his wisdom, kindness and gentle leadership within schools, his church and community organizations. He was a lifelong model of integrity who will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbours who have visited and supported Dave and Marg over this past year. Your love and companionship has meant so much. A celebration of his life will be observed at Humbercrest United Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Humbercrest United Church.

Mr. Parsons was my music teacher at North Albion Collegiate. He was always so kind and patient. He once gave myself and the 2 other percussionists tickets to se The Toronto Symphony for The Planets. I loved it, bought the album and walked down the aisle to it!
I am still in touch with one of them and kn now that our many school friends loved Mr. Parsons too. I last saw him at a NACI reunion.
May you be blessed at this time. Sincerely Susan (Gailer) Vidler

I first sang with David with "The Queensmen of Toronto" mens choir.A wonderful experience. Then met up again with "Let There Be Music" choir.
He was co-director with Susan Chopp and they formed a dynamic duo.
His talent for leadership and his musical knowledge made for a great learning experience.
David's wry humor and sharp wit made our executive meetings and our practices a fun time.
A highlight during our concert was when David played his violin at our concert and also his dear wife Marg, who regaled us with her own piano solo.
A great person who will be missed by all.

In April, 2019, my husband Don and I celebrated our 35th Wedding Anniversary with a party in our home with very dear friends. Dave and Marg came and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, reacquainting themselves with people from our National Music Camp in the late seventies. This was the last time we saw Dave....shortly before he began his very long year of suffering. Despite this being a very, very difficult time of grieving for Marg, Shannon, Andrea, John and they families, may knowing now that Dave is at peace bring them some source of comfort. My memories of Dave span more than four decades. At NMC, in addition to his musical talent-leadership, conducting, performing, mentoring....Dave
was a very patient bridge player and a great team player on the baseball team! He was the father of the three children who sang with me for many years at Kingsway-Lambton United Church and in the Toronto Children's Chorus. Dave exuded kindness, gentleness, thoughtfulness, and care who -very rare these days- thought before he spoke. Dave had a life well-lived and is now likely conducting an orchestra in heaven! Don and I send our love and deepest condolences to Marg, Shannon, Andrea and John, and their families.

Marg and family: a week ago I tried to find your phone number to ask how Dave was. I had no luck and now I see I am too late. Dave was just as described, kind and gentle with a sardonic wit. I sometimes met him by accident at Cloverdale Mall when we both walked during winter weather. I am so sorry for your loss. Please contact me when you are up to it.

As co-director of Let There Be Music Community choir, I can attest that Dave will be sorely missed. His insight into each choral selection was inspiring. His ability to convey to our audiences little known facts about each selection demonstrated his deep knowledge and appreciation of what he was conducting. His calm demeanour helped me deal with some of the frustrations and stresses of conducting a community choir. When he retired from the choir, I felt like I had lost the backbone of the choir. I was lucky enough to have him return to us with his small ensemble and regale us with some delightful ditties from the British Isles. I missed him when he left the choir and I know that he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Rest In Peace, my dear friend.

I was so sad to hear of Daves death. He had become a valued member of Humbercrest United Church. I enjoyed his violin performances at the choir trivia nights and was looking forward to performing some duets with him sometime in the future. He will be sadly missed.
