David Shiffman Obituary

SHIFFMAN, Dr. David Phillip - Passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Baycrest Palliative Unit after a painful struggle with advanced cancer. In this, his 81st year, he was surrounded by his six children and their families as well as their mother, Myrna Lofsky (nee Sirota). Close friends also brought him comfort and spent time with him in his hardest moments. He will be remembered fondly as a wonderful father, loving Zaida, dear friend, wise teacher, caring doctor and most wonderful storyteller. In his death as in his life, his suffering brought those around him close together and united by the strength of love. He will live on in our hearts and anyone he touched will certainly have a life lesson to share. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and we will forever be better people for having had him in our lives. We love you so much and miss you already, your children: Cory, Cheryl and Chris (Gross), Sandy, Barry and Robin (Fribance), Carol and Greg (Pearson), Bonnie and Tony (Steadman) and grandchildren: Michael, Sydni, Franklin, Leah, Max, Noah, Sarah, Lily and Zoe. We would like to extend special thanks to the special people who worked endlessly and effortlessly to provide love, support and care: Lilia Fontillas and Bess Acker, Suzanne Sonnier andthe team at St. Annes, Dr. B Abadi, Dr. R. Sidlofsky and Dr. Daphna Grossman and the team at Baycrest 6West. In the words of our father's lifelong friend, Rabbi Bert Bloom, 'the world lost a very special person today'. Funeral will be held on Sunday, October 3 at Shaarei Tzedek section of Roselawn Cemetery, time to be set after Shabbat. For additional details, please call Hebrew Basic Burial at 416-782-1111. Shiva will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to honour his love of music to The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

I was so sorry to hear that Dave died. He was in my medical graduation year of 1956 and he was also in my clinic of ten students so I knew him quite well. Unfortunately I had lost contact with him the last few years. I used to hear of him from Dr W.E. Hall, who we mutually admired. When Dr Hall died I lost the connection. I am sure he will be missed. I only heard of his death yesterday. It will be recorded in the archives of the Medical ALuimni Assocation where I work in the archives. Tom Patterson

For Barry Robin Lily Zoe and Family

Our deepest condolences on the loss of your cherished father and Zaida. He clearly gave so much of himself - and more - to his family, friends, patients and the medical profession. As you do Barry, with your brilliant musical genius and leadership. The world is a better place, as his contributions were larger than life. May his memory be for a blessing.

The people we love never go away,
They are in our hearts every day,
They are never seen, but always near,
Still always loved and very dear.

Though words cannot express our sorrow, may the memories of your dad give you strength
