DAVID SUGDEN Obituary

SUGDEN, DAVID CLAY After a lengthy battle with Dementia, David passed away on March 26, 2020, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Beloved husband of June for over 61 years. Cherished dad of Kevin and Carolyn. "Naughty grandad" of Dylan, Charlotte and Fraser. Loving brother-in-law of Alan and Chris Louden, uncle of Kim, Claire, Dawn and Hilary (and their families), cousin of Carolyn Sanderson. David will also be missed by extended family in Northern Ireland as well as by many friends, colleagues, air modellers and acquaintances. He will be forever remembered for his love of model airplanes from an early age. In fact, David represented "the best country in the world", Canada, in many international free-flight model airplane competitions. He was an aeronautical engineer in the test flight division at Avro Canada and worked on the Avro Arrow! After the close of the company, David answered his second calling and became a dentist. He and June moved to Oshawa in 1965, where he passionately practised dentistry for over 40 years. David loved travelling the world with June and enjoyed classical music, often overheard whistling concertos of the great composers as he worked on his model airplanes. His was a life smartly lived, with a super set of horseshoes. No formal funeral services will occur at this time, although a celebration may be planned for the future. Arrangements entrusted to THORNTON CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE, 1200 Thornton Rd. N., Oshawa (south of Taunton Rd. and off of Dryden Blvd., 905-579-6787). Donations may be made to Alzheimer Society or the charity of choice. Expressions of condolence may be left at www.etouch.ca

Dear June, Carol, Kevin. Our deepest sympathy for the passing of David. He was my first contact in Canada, when we came from the Netherlands. We had a few things in common. Model Aeroplanes and Dentistry. You taught me many tips and tricks of the trade during our brief residency in Oshawa. We are forever grateful to you and Carol to make our first Canadian experience a great one. Rest in Peace Dave.

"Suggie" was one of the first aeromodellers I met when I came to Canada 55 years ago. Although he was actually no taller than me, I always thought of him as a tall man. His achievements were legendary. After making a flight that wasn't as perfect as he would have liked it to be, instead of making an immediate adjustment and trying again, Dave would sit in his chair studying the model and contemplating. Half an hour or more could go by with nothing apparently happening, then he would make a well-considered adjustment, fly again, and the result was always nearer to the perfection that he sought. His engines were as legendary as the man himself. He has been missed from the flying field for a long time, he will be even more so now.

It was with extreme sadness that we received word of Dave's passing, we had shared great memories throughout the many years we were friends and patient.

I had the privilege of travelling with Dave to several World Free Flight Championships and local contests Aylmer, Centralia, France, Austria, Denmark, Sweden.

Dave's self deprecating humor regarding his moniker Tupence Sugdenfrom his younger days belied his very English sense of humour.

Dave was a true original, never following the crowd. When I first visited his place in Oshawa and his machine shop where he lovingly crafted the motors for his model aeroplanes. The preference of his competitors was to use Italian engines, Super Tigre then Rossi. Eventually he started using Rossis but put in his personal touch by modifying and tuning them for additional power. On the path to excellence fibreglass propellers were turned out in his little workshop.
He could have been a leader but unfortunately not too many of us had the skills, ability and knowledge of an aeronautical engineer to emulate him.

God definitely threw away the mould after he created him, and now he has joined him.

Rest In Peace Dave, you've lived such a rich and amazing life that you can march into the sunset leaving a long shadow.

Dear June, its been a long time since we have had a chat, but we think of you often. We recall our interest in music and the topic of the day at the office. Jackie recalls when she was at the office and your opening day gift of flowers was still fresh. She noticed that although Dave was appreciative, he could not help himself from commenting on the extravagance. We enjoyed his excellent care until he retired. Fond memories will keep him in our thoughts and yours although the world will be a little out of balance without him.
Our condolences to you and your family.

Dear June, Carol , Kevin and families.. we are so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I was so very fortunate to have started my dental career with him at age 17. His honest, compassionate , friendly manner with patients gave me the basis on which I practiced dental hygiene for many years. He was a very interesting, smart , kind man and will be truly missed. I can recall many times where I had to pull him by the shirt away from visiting with one patient to come to see another one. He was not a man of few words or opinions. His patients loved him . Thinking of you at this very difficult time, Sharon& Rick Rosnak
