DONALD BROOKES Obituary

BROOKES, DONALD (BROOKSIE) June 1, 1936 - March 31, 2022 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Don at the Collingwood Marine & General Hospital. Don was predeceased by his first wife Mary (McGourty). He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 36 years, Kay (Nixon), sister, Diana Cattley and her family. Don is survived by his loving children Jeffrey (Kelley), Laura (Bruce), Bradley and Michael (Sharon) and stepchildren, Lorraine (Bryan), Jennifer and Heather. Don will be remembered fondly by his grandchildren Katherine, Jimmy, Beverly, Margo, Harris, Kate, Jane, Nathan and Olivia. After leaving school, Don tried his hand working on the railway and in the plumbing trade. He then transitioned to sales where he found his calling ending up at Xerox, from where he retired in 1994. On retiring, Don and Kay settled in Collingwood, where they enjoyed years of skiing and Don taught all the grandkids to ski. Don thrived in retirement joining the Probus Club, skiing with his pals, daily morning coffee with the guys, travelling with their great circle of friends, spending time with family, dinners with friends, always with a smile on his face and a story to tell. A special thank you to all those friends who were there over the years as Don fought his long battle with leukemia. In spite of the toll the leukemia took, there was never a time Don didn't put his feet on the floor ready to meet the day. Don will be remembered for his kind nature, strength of character and especially his dedication to his family. Don could be relied on to give all the kids advice, solicited or unsolicited! He held an immense amount of love in his heart for all the kids and grandkids keeping in close communication with all. Cremation has taken place and there will not be a formal service.

My heart goes out to you all. Uncle Don was my favourite uncle. Growing up our family gatherings were always full of fun and lots of food! I had many comforting conversations with Uncle Don during my Mom's last year and again with my brother Bernie's last days. I will always remember and miss your Dad. He was so proud of all his children and grandchildren.

Don was my hiring Sales Manager at Xerox and an exceptional individual. I will always remember Don with great fondness. A father to be proud of, a boss to be respected, and a friend without conditions. I was fortunate to have Don play an influential role in my career and he will always be in my heart. Rest in Peace Don, you made the world a better place.

Great guy, wonderful sense of humour! We had tons of fun, at work at the big "X" on the hills of Collingwood! Had not seen Don since a visit to our London farm house 1984. Sadden by the news!
