Donald ESSENSA Obituary

ESSENSA, Donald Eugene - Born in Harvey Station, New Brunswick on March 14, 1930. Peacefully, with his loving wife Maxine at his side at Mississauga Trillium Hospital on Saturday, February 2, 2013. Don leaves Maxine (nee Mersereau), his wife and best friend who he was a devoted and loving husband for 63 years. Much loved father of Greg (Lynn) and Bob (Jeanine). Treasured Grampy to Josh, Ben, Ryan, Jake and Cameron. He holds a special place in their hearts and played an important and wonderful part in their lives. He will be missed by his sisters Glenna (Lindsay), Shirley and Marg. Predeceased by sisters Berta, Tina, brothers Lawrence, Earl, Raymond and Lyold. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He was a very special gentleman and will be missed by his dear niece, Patti and many friends and family. We all remember Don fondly of being at the hockey rink to watch the boys play, his perfectly manicured lawn and his devotion to his family will be cherished. He will be remembered for taking the time to stop, talk and helping everyone who came in contact with him. Don was an active member of the Kipling Baptist Church. A special thank you to the many friends who provided support to family. We would like to thank the staff at Mississauga Trillium Hospital 5th floor who provided comfort to Don and his family during his final days. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 6th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 7th at Turner and Porter 'Butler' Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Kipling and Islington Aves.). A reception at the Funeral Home will be held following the service. A private interment will be held at a later date in Toronto and a celebration of life service will be held in New Brunswick. Mr. Essensa was my hockey coach many years ago. He kindly assumed responsibility for getting me to and from games and practices after my father Jethro died (in 1972, when I was nine). I´m 62 now (and a college professor in Michigan). I´ve never forgotten Mr. Essensa and think of him often: a role model whose example I failed to appreciate until much later in life. I hope his family reads this and perhaps receives some (belated!) consolation for their loss.

Dear Maxine, Greg, Lynn and boys watching hockey games at MCC will never be the same. I will always look back fondly at the conversations I had with Don at the rinks. He was always had a warm smile and kind words for me and the boys.

It is with sadness that I read about Don this morning. I worked with him at WORK WEAR and he was the most gentle kind man I have ever met. He always had time to help others and everyone loved him. May God take him into his arms and give him the love he so deserves. He will be in my thoughts and prayers. Much sympathy to his wife and all his family.
