DONALD JOHNSTON Obituary

JOHNSTON, DONALD FRANK June 7, 1930 - February 28, 2022 After a wonderful life filled with love, music and a career in journalism that spanned decades, Don Johnston passed away in Oakville, on February 28, 2022, in his 92nd year. He is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Helen (nee Mundell). Don was predeceased by his beloved parents, Lockhart and Lillian Johnston (nee Falkiner) and sister Mimi Gillies (late Don Gillies) as well as his son, David, whom he adored. Don is also survived by his brother Lockhart (late Anne). He will be missed by his large and caring extended family including nieces Maureen Gillies, Donna Gillies Marson (Kevin) and Wendy Johnston (Richard) as well as nephews Stephen Gillies (Deanne), John Gillies, Michael Johnston and Daniel Johnston (Ann). Don will also be lovingly remembered by Helen's nieces Mary (Rich), Barb (Terry) and Jane as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews and their children. Don was born in Walkerville, Ontario (now part of Windsor), but grew up in Hamilton. Summer jobs as a copy boy at the Hamilton Spectator fuelled Don's desire to be a news reporter, which he pursued as a bright and ambitious teen. The Spec hired Don full-time after he graduated from Westdale Collegiate and by age 19, he had progressed from newsroom copy boy to cub reporter. Don was soon covering police matters, the courts and City Hall. Over the next 35-plus years, Don built an impressive and fulfilling career in journalism. Early in his career, radio station CHML persuaded him to leave the newspaper and become their City Hall Reporter. Don soon became the News Director at CHML, where his department won a number of awards for their skilled reporting. Don was one of the founders of the Radio & Television News Directors of Canada (now RTNDA) in 1962 and a former VP ('69) and President of the organization ('71). In 1972, CFRB Toronto was the most listened to radio station in Canada. When they needed to fill the role of News Director, they chose Don. He served there for 15 years until his retirement. In 1984, Don co-founded the Gordon Sinclair Foundation in order to support young journalists. Outside of work, Don's life revolved around Helen, their families and their many friends. Helen was the light of Don's life and he doted on her. In return, she was a loving and dedicated partner. Don and Helen loved to travel and saw many parts of the world together. Later, they would join extended family on vacations to the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Mexico and other warm destinations. They spent every holiday with family and enjoyed an active social life. Don also loved the cottage on Muldrew Lake in Muskoka, where he and Helen spent many happy summers. His siblings, Mimi and Lock, had cottages on the same stretch of lake, and the families often got together for a meal, a drink or a swim. Don was an exceptional pianist who often treated friends and family to impromptu jazz performances. He enjoyed listening to jazz and classical music, reading good books, writing, playing cards, keeping up with the news, swimming and watching Jeopardy with Helen. His loved ones feel fortunate to have known such a smart, kind and accomplished man. A celebration of life for Don Johnston will be held at Smith's Funeral Home in Burlington (Guelph Line location), on March 12th, at 1 p.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 12 p.m.

If it hadn't been for Don I might not have had a career in broadcasting. The first year after Don became news director at CFRB,he changed how the student summer program was run.Up until then "Good News Reporters". were eight males from Ryerson .Don decided it would be evenly split between males and females and from any college .I was lucky enough to be hired along with others like Valerie Whittingham who would become Valerie Pringle.Don was a gentle leader( and obviously someone who was interested in equality) who showed us how a professional and highly regarded newsroom was run .my condolences to his family.I will never forget him.

Don was a lovely gentleman of the old school. My condolences to his family and the many people whose lives he touched. My encounter with him during the mid-80s was personal and fleeting, but memorable. My boyfriend worked with Don at CFRB and needed to replace his news vehicle. The choice was between a Ford Taurus and Mercury Marquis. I wouldn´t be seen in a Taurus so it had to be the Marquis. This was relayed to Don who said, "If she can find it, she can have it." We found the car at 2am the next day (during a blizzard) and were thrilled to be driving it a week later, thanks to Don. I worked at RB in the early 90s, and while Don had gone on to other adventures, it would have been a privilege to spend more time with him. And perhaps taken him shopping for a new car.

Sorry to hear of Don's passing. 92 years...he had a good run. Always enjoyed our time together ...be it at CFRB in Toronto or at an antique boat show in Gravenhurst. Over many years he directed the operations of two of the best radio newsrooms in the country, CFRB and CHML. That tells you all you need to know about his career in journalism. I was fortunate enough to work with Don for more than a decade. Together we hung a few awards on the wall...and we had a good time doing it! The 'RB alumni has lost a good one!!

Sincerest condolences to Helen and family. I'm so glad Don was able to join us in 2021 for the 50th anniversary of RTDNA, an organization he helped establish. He was a broadcast pioneer who was well respected both personally and professionally.

I recently learned the sad news that Don Johnston had passed away and extend my condolences to his wonderful family & countless friends.
My first contact with Don was many decades ago. when I was working at CFRB's sister stations CJAD
and CJFM in Montreal.
A Toronto CKFM radio job opening was posted on the wall in Montreal
I applied, drove down for an interview and was successful.
Later I moved from FM to AM
Now, I'm not sure who should be blamed for me getting hired but doubt that Don was the prime suspect.
Kidding aside,
Don was a fine newsman soft-spoken and calm under pressure which could be pretty intense at times especially in a big market like Toronto.
I learned a lot from him.
I'm glad he had a nice retirement surrounded by extended family and friends - and with a piano nearby to put his many talents to good use.

Take care everyone
