DONALD McNEILL Obituary

McNEILL, DONALD ARCHIBALD July 7, 1940 - April 9, 2023 Don McNeill, son of Donald Charles and Gladys (Turnbull) McNeill, passed away peacefully at Collingwood General Hospital on April 9, 2023. He is survived by his dear wife of 60 years, Jo-Anne (Christie) McNeill; his children, Christie (Dan Tamblyn) McNeill and Andrew (Teresa Goncalves) McNeill; his grandchildren, Noah and Sienna McNeill; and his sister, Shirley (Ian) Rowe. Don was a lifelong student and avid reader. He earned B.A., M.Ed. and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Toronto, and an M.A. (Classics) from McMaster University. He attended Victoria College at University of Toronto where he made many lifelong friends and met his wife, Jo-Anne. He cherished his time at "Vic" and shared stories of his time in the Glee Club, theatre groups and debate club. He was Alumni President for his graduation year, 1962. Don spent most of his twenty year teaching career as Classics Department Head at North Toronto Collegiate. Don also held numerous administrative positions within the Toronto Board of Education and was a seasonal lecturer at Queen's University and University of Toronto. In 1982, Don switched careers and became a full-time student at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. After graduating, he joined the Shibley Righton law firm in Toronto where he practiced for many years as a litigator. Don and Jo-Anne eventually moved permanently to Wasaga Beach where Jo-Anne grew up. Don spent the later years of his legal career as a sole practitioner in Wasaga. He loved practicing law and through the years argued cases in all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Don enjoyed travelling. As the Head of Classics at North Toronto, Don annually took a group of students on archeological tours to Greece and Italy. He also spent many summers with Jo-Anne cruising around the Mediterranean. In later years, he and Jo-Anne spent every winter in Siesta Key, Florida, which they loved. Don was very proud of his Scottish heritage and welcomed any opportunity to put on his Scottish Highland formal wear, including his McNeill tartan kilt. One of his most treasured memories was locating his ancestral home in North Ardbeg, Scotland. Photos of the farm and a slate shingle off the family cottage sit proudly in the family dining room to this day. Don loved to take photographs and chronical family events in albums that he would spend hours assembling. He finished his last album, bringing the books up to date just days before he passed. Don will be missed beyond measure and remembered always by all that knew him, including those of us that had the privilege to call him husband, father and grandfather. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to St. Elizabeth Foundation (SEHC.com\Foundation\Donate), who so lovingly cared for him in recent months. A private immediate family gathering has been held to honour Don with a celebration of life to follow at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Lynn-Stone Funeral Home, Elmvale, Ontario.

Sorry to hear about Don but have fond memories of him from his time as Head of Classics at North Toronto and a Vice Principal at night school. Classics office was right next door to the his office. Often shared a libation with Murray Batt and Don after Thursday night school. My condolences to family and RIP Don.

I had the privilege of having Don as my teacher at North Toronto for Grade 12 Latin in '69-'70. By then Latin grammar began to defeat me but I loved the authors component. I still remember writing an essay on the poetry of Catullus and before giving it back to me, Don read portions of it to the class. I will never forget how honoured I felt that "Mr. McNeill" thought my observations and analysis had merit! In later years, I enjoyed running into him in the Zehrs store at the Beach and the SuperStore when I was at my cottage; he always had time to chat! I always smiled when I drove by his name on the sign at his Mosley Street office. We had a lovely visit at NT's 100th Anniversary Open House in 2012. I will always think of him with kindness, gratitude and respect. My sympathies to all the family. Lorraine Clarkson

So sorry to hear of Mr McNeill's passing. Really enjoyed being in his Latin classes at NTCI. A great teacher. Very pleased to meet him again, at the 100th Anniversary celebrations. He remembered me, and my brother, very well. Ave, atque Vale, Mr McNeill!

Condolences to Mr McNeill's family and loved ones. I was a student at NTCI in the late 70's during Mr MacNeill's last three years there. When I look back on the teachers and the classes that remember best and came to value the most in my adult life, Mr MacNeill's Classical Studies classes in grades 10, 11, and 12 are the first courses I think of. To be honest, I really didn't appreciate the excellence of his curriculum and his teaching style until many years later, but I am certain now that Mr MacNeill was one of the greatest and quietly inspirational teachers in my life. Sic transit gloria mundi.

My condolences to the McNeil family. I am quite proud to be able to say i took two years of latin in high school, at North Toronto, grades 9 and 10. So surprised to enjoy it. Mr. McNeil introduced some new little book that we read from outloud, someone named Julius was one of the characters. Mr. McNeil was a good teacher. Thank you for sharing some of the details of his life in this obituary.

My condolences to the family. I worked with Don back in 1979 at Bloor-Brockton-Kent summer school. I was 16 and was the summer school secretary. Don was such a great boss and a great person. He would always bring in treats from the local donut shop for staff. He was a very caring and genuine person. I remember he telling me he wanted to be a lawyer. Glad he did that and by reading this obituary, he had an awesome life. I am sad to see that he passed, but happy to see he had a great life.
