Donna DeBolt Obituary

DONNA MARIE "DAISY" DeBOLT July 19, 1945 - October 4, 2011 Renowned singer/song writer, Daisy DeBolt, passed away suddenly in Toronto on October 4, 2011 after a brief, but fierce battle with cancer. Born in Winnipeg, Daisy grew up surrounded by music. Her mother was a classically trained musician, her father played the blues, and legendary guitarist Lenny Breau gave her lessons on guitar. A musical powerhouse, Daisy hit the Toronto music scene in the mid 1960s teaming up with Allan Fraser to form the acid folk sensation Fraser & DeBolt. Later, Daisy pursued a solo career, writing film scores for the National Film Board, touring, performing on CBC Radio and in numerous theatrical productions. During this time, Daisy collaborated with many different musicians and artists to produce six CDs, each one exploring different aspects of her prodigious muse. Music was Daisy's first passion, but she also inspired everyone with her love of gardening and food. She was a true optimist when it came to growing plants and her plants grew better because of it. One glorious summer she lived off the land in a grass hut she built in the Eastern Townships. Daisy never stopped farming, growing much of what she ate and always sharing her produce with her friends and neighbours. Daisy was a woman of incredible strength and generosity; a keen environmentalist, a pioneer in the world of music, a vibrant soul most at home in the great outdoors. Predeceased by Governor General's Award winning poet Robert Dickson, the father of her son, Daisy is survived by her beloved son, Jake DeBolt, and a huge family of musicians who played with her. Many will gather for an evening of music and memories to honour the "queen of the avant-garde" and her five decade contribution to the Canadian music scene. 8:30 p.m. October 24, Hugh's Room. 416-531-6604 hughsroom.com

Jacob, your mom was amazing, I watched in disbelief as Fraser and Debolt exploded on my Stage at Opus in Ottawa. It was one of their first gigs, We all fell in love, she was particularly fond of my dog Buttons. I had met Allan before but it was Daisy that made it happen . When I heard of her crossing over I was devastated even though I hadn't made contact for years. She was special and her voice will never be forgotten. Love for ever ,Jim legge.

hard to believe "frazer & debolt w/ ian guenther" is over 40 years old. i knew "dance hall girls" from a version by bill garrett and sharon ryan so i guessed the album would be good but that's a serious understatement(like blown away... which i was). it's still one of my very favorite albums. i don't really pay much attention to much but music these days and i was sad to learn of her passing as i was watching them do "gypsy solitaire" on youtube. she was so talented. my deepest condolences. it's hard to think artists i've loved for so long pare gone but thank god for her wonderful website. i love those videos. and i love to see artists like her who just kept getting better. i'm happy to hear that she was working on getting those early lp's onto cd. i know there are copies available but it's nice to think that somebody who is actually entitled to the royalties might get them.

OMG!!! How can someone so chock full of life be gone? I am soooo sad! I sae her in a dinky little community hall somewhere near Napanee Ontario with about 50 other people. She made me laugh; her music has entertained many in my home, including my grandchildren. She imagined, wrote, and sang with the innocence and joy of a child. Daiy's Bag Lady Blues is one of the most compassionate songs I ever heard. I miss her althought she never spoke a word to me...but I have one of her records to comfort me. Wherever she is, you know there will be music - and kindness and understanding. Fly away in joy Daisy! And thanks for the pleasure your music gives me.

God-speed, Daisy. It's a much less vibrant world without you in it.

I saw her only once, in nyc, on a bill with Tim Buckley, and Martin Mull. She remained seated throughout the set, and sang from a very still composed place. I will always see her purity, her peacefulness, and her musical generousity.

Playing with Daisy (and Alan) was marvelous. "No ordinary man can..."
An inspiration. A day/night in l'estrie with those whacky goats was magical like all things she did.

Daisy was passion, Daisy was love. Anything she touched grew stronger.

She was one of the most memorable friends that ever lived in my home. She made the garden beautiful and to this day, the raspberry bushes give off the best raspberries every year.
