When I first started teaching at Cliffside Jr P.S. in 1976, and coming to Duckworth's for the first time, I remember seeing Mr. D. bringing the fresh cut fries up in the white plastic pails. He had both a determined look and friendly smile as he saw us waiting in line for our orders. Best Fish and Chips, (with that wonderful coleslaw and bread) in T.O. I walk past his and Rita's grave marker each day at Resthaven, with fond memories of my knowing Mr. D. as one of many happy customers. Truly a great example of a hardworking Scarborough citizen, and in reading other's comments, a man loved and missed by family, friends, and all of us, his customers, who had the pleasure of meeting him.

My family has many fond memories of being greeted by name by Doug every Friday night and enjoying the best fish and chips in Toronto. He always supported the community and supplied many a trophy for baseball teams from Birchmount. Thanks Doug and you now know how well loved you really were.

What a wonderful man. I only knew him from the store but he was such a hard working man and always had a smile on his face. I also went with my family in my single digits and continued on with my married friends -Friday night. I haven't got a lot of personal stories but I know people used to come to the shop from all over just to get his fish and chips. One day I met a couple of business man from London ON. RIP

First and foremost, my condolances to the Duckworth Family.
To some people it might have been just a fish and chip shop, but to the people who walked through that front door any day of the week and especially Fridays it was a ritual. From my single digit years, I can still see the arborite tables lined up on my right side as I walked in. Full of families gather in the honour of eating, and made by a person that loved the job. Two pieces of fish and chips, rapped up in paper and covered with ketchup and malt vinager, along with a good helping of salt & pepper.
Although I have been away from Scarborough (Stop 12) for now over 40+ years, I always am greatful to see that the Duckworth name is still serving people. What a legacy. You Mr. Duckworth have served your community and I hope that the city of Scarborough reconizes your service.
Thank You

Dear Lisa and Michael,
My deepest sympathies to you both and your extended families. I know you will miss your dad dearly but I am sure you will remember the very many happy memories; you will think back fondly knowing he lived a good life and had soooo many friend.
It has been 38 years since I worked at Duckworth's but I was very close to you and your Dad then, and remember you all very fondly. I am confident you will remember me too. Lisa, you may recall that we bumped into each other at the Deerhurst Inn in Huntsville a few years ago. I was happy to see you and receive an update on Doug and your family.
My nephew was at your father's house about a year ago doing some plumbing and he mentioned my name to your dad. Doug told my nephew that I was one of his favorites...haha...I know he had many wonderful staff over the years and many favorites!!! But, I was sooo proud and honoured that he remembered me.
I wish that I had heard about his passing earlier. I most certainly would have attended his funeral.
I would very much appreciate hearing from you if you do have the opportunity to send me an update of your families and some pictures. I can be contacted at [email protected] or [email protected]
My deepest regards to you both.
Sincerely,
Nancy Blakely (nee Gordon)

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Duckworth. I lived in Scarborough (Birchmount and Danforth Ave area)so I visited both locations regularly. My parents took me there in my younger years and I also took my own kids there. After moving to Ajax I didn't get there as often but any time we were in the area you bet we would stop and get our meal. Thank you so much for the many happy memories. RIP

MI worked for Mr. DuckWorth of DuckWorth Fish & Chips as one of my very 1st. jobs..... I was a potatoe peeler , a dish washer and eventually a head waitress ..... One of my long memories is that I would work Friday's after school and my mother was a true Catholic and ate fish on Fridays ..... Sooooo every Friday night after work Mr. DuckWorth would make our fish and chips and I would ride my bike home ,,,,, and deliver dinner...... Many times there was fish and chips left and he would give me some of the left overs for of course a special price,,,,, RIP ..... Douglas DuckWorth .....

I believe my own Dad first took me to Duckworths 60 years ago. When I moved to Calgary eight years ago it was the last place I ate at before I departed. When I returned to Toronto at Christmas it was the first place I ate at upon arriving. The best fish and chips restaurant ever. Well done Doug and I believe it's time I introduced my own grand kids to both locations.

So very sorry to hear of your Dad's death. He and your Mom were the best Uncle and Aunt anyone could wish for. So many fond memories I have of them both. They would quite often visit my Dad Len up in Madoc when Dad came to live with me. They would get quite the laugh out of our Bulldogs and get in a quick game of snooker downstairs while your Mom and I chatted. We were so lucky to have both our Dad's around for 92 and 93 years. From my experience you sure do miss them when they are gone. Your Dad was a proud WW2 Veteran and sure was handsome in his RCAF Uniform. My brother Doug your Dad's namesake continued his legacy with the RCAF. Much love is sent to you Mike and Lisa and your families at this sad and difficult time. Love and Prayers from your Cousin Diane Donlon.

To the family of Mr. Duckworth. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I ate at the Danforth store for the first time in the early 70's when a few of us high school kids from Danforth Tech wanted a good fish and chip lunch. Later, working for Bell Canada the store was in my service area and I enjoyed many meals there. I moved away from Toronto in the late 70's, but I try to make Duckworth's a stop each time I'm in the city. Thankfully the food is as good today as it was all those years ago, which I believe is a reflection on Len's integrity. I do remember him from the early days, as I'm sure many others will also. I'd also like to say Thanks for his service to our country.
May he rest in peace.
