DUNCAN GREEN Obituary

DUNCAN GREEN Died May 13, 2012 after living so richly for 85 years. Duncan was predeceased by his beloved wife and childhood sweetheart Barbara (Hague). Always to be remembered for his love and laughter by his daughters, Laurie and Nora; sons-in-law Michael and Paul and his six adoring grandchildren: Emily, Hannah, Ethan, Owen, Hayden and Livi. Born in the village of Swansea, the eldest of six (Jim, Doug, Ruth, Ann, Mary) of Duncan and Sarah. His lifelong passion for learning, literature and the arts was ignited at University College, University of Toronto and Hart House with the University College Player's Guild. Throughout his life, he sought out stage performances: from high school auditoriums, the back seat of a car at the Fringe Festival, to the Globe Theatre in London and the BAM Theatre in Brooklyn. Nothing brought him more pleasure than to ignite other people's passion for the stage. His life's work in public education was his other passion. From his beginnings in the classroom as an English teacher at Humberside Collegiate Institute through to his years as Director of the Toronto Board of Education and Assistant Deputy Minister of Education for Ontario, Duncan appreciated that public education is the breeding ground for cultural understanding and tolerance and the great leveller in a society that is increasingly economically polarized. "Let us not waste our time in idle discourse! Let us do something, while we have the chance! It is not every day that we are needed. But at this place, at this moment of time, all mankind is us, whether we like it or not. Let us make the most of it, before it is too late!" - Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot Duncan lived with passion and joy which he shared with his many cherished friends and family and the community through, for example, his early work with Out of the Cold. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 23, at the Turner & Porter "Butler" Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Islington and Kipling Aves.) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, May 24, at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, 3962 Bloor St. W., on May 24 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. with reception to follow. Poems and stories welcome. Friends who wish to remember Duncan are encouraged to support the Toronto District School Board through the Duncan Green Trust Fund. I had the privilege of benefitting from Duncan Green's wisdom as a senior student at Parkdale Collegiate. As co-president of the students' council (63-64), I often asked him for advice. He was generous with his time and ideas. One statement stands out, even after all these years. Emphasizing the importance of education for women, he said, "When you educate a man, you educate one person but when you educate a woman, you educate an entire family."
I went on to a career in teaching as have two of my three children.
Rest assured that Duncan Green is being remembered with respect abd affection by very many.
My deepest sympathy to the family.

Laurie and Nora-- our deepest sympathy to you. Your Dad was a great friend to both Lew and I from his teaching years through retirement. We heard from him a few weeks back and will always treasure our memories of both your Mom and Dad.

Dear Laurie, Nora and family:

Duncan was a caring and visionary leader as Director of the Toronto Board of Education. He passionately articulated the values of a school system that was responsive to changing demographics of the city of Toronto, and consistently led us towards that goal. The excellence of the Toronto public school system today stands squarely on the foundation which he helped to build during the 1970's and 1980's.

Firstly, I send heart felt condolences to the family. My association with Duncan was through the Ministry of Education where I had the interesting, challenging position of being his executive/special right hand person. I delighted in being "Acting Assistant Deputy Minister" when he was off on government business. How "delightful" to know that his love before his life in the MOE was the theatre and now my love after the MOE is the theatre. Always I will remember the sign on his desk. "You can get a lot done if you do not care who gets the credit."
An amazing man who was a wonder to accompany on a part of his educational sojourn. Blessed repose and eternal memory

Dear Laurie, Nora and family
We were so very saddened to hear of your dad's passing.
His zest for life and love for his family was so palpable. He always brought joy to a situation. It was a pleasure to have known him. He will be missed on the shores of Lake Huron.

Duncan Green was a great man who supported, redirected, encouraged and blessed my development as a young man. There is no more noble work than to guide young people well.

Duncan Green read Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" at my mother's (Beryl Smith) memorial service, and his delivery did both the poet and my mother honour. He was a dear and valued friend to her, being one of her "most favourite people on earth". A fine example of humankind. My sincere condolences on the loss of your father and grandfather.

Duncan Green was a favourite teacher at H.C.I, as well as a colleague of my father's. I am humming Blest Be the Tie that Binds which was sung in His production of Our Town circa 1950 in which I was privileged to have a role. He will be missed as a friend to all and a model citizen
