Edward Chung Obituary

Edward Sen CHUNG

1925 - 2017

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Dad and grandfather, Edward Chung, May 2, 2017, at age 91. Son of the late Hong Chung and Poon Shing Fong and predeceased by his wife Margaret, to whom he was married to over 61 years, and his siblings Mary and James. Devoted father to Catherine (John Patterson), Pamela (Bob Duffield) and Janice. Grandfather to Stephanie (Kyle Wilson), Nancy, Joanna and Ashlyn. Geegee, as he liked to be called by his grandchildren, will be dearly missed by his family. He was a devoted family man with a great sense of humour and he was a master of puns. Ed was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario and had a distinguished education obtaining his BSc at the University of Toronto and a MASc in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked for most of his career at Shell Canada as a Chemical Engineer. Ed had a kind, generous nature and a strong religious faith and he and Marg were actively involved with St. Luke's and Humber Valley United Churches. He had a strong sense of giving back to his community through his volunteer work and in recognition of his work with the Mon Sheong Foundation, Ed received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Marg and Ed travelled around the world and spent many winters in Florida with friends and relatives playing golf. Ed was an avid golfer and a past member of Islington Golf Club, managing to get a hole in one a number of times. He also enjoyed photography and woodworking and once constructed a colour TV. He was always modest and was a sweet, gentle soul, who touched the hearts of many people. Special thanks to Minister Mark Winger, Dr. Hung and Kathy McKeen from Trillium Hospital, Dr. Morgan and the wonderful staff from Tapestry, Dr. Mavrogiannis and the staff and volunteers at Dorothy Ley Hospice for their care and compassion. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8th from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m. at the Turner & Porter Funeral Home, Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke. A private family service will be held as per Dad's wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's name can be made to Dorothy Ley Hospice or Humber Valley United Church. Janice, Pam & Cathy - So sorry for your loss. I remember both of your parents for their warm smiles and positive outlook on life. Fond memories of seeing them at Islington Golf Club and all school events when we were growing up at St George's, John G Althouse and Richview. Thinking of you.

My deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. I worked for Ed in 1977 in Toronto. I had only two years with Shell and needed a lot of help. Fortunately Ed was there to help, teach and guide me to a successful conclusion of our project. He'd work evenings weekends side by side with me. Not all people get a boss like that. He set me on a path of success and I eventually retired as a Vice President. To him I owe a great debt of gratitude. He will be remembered and greatly missed

My late wife Diane Lanthier very much enjoyed Ed and his late wife at Islington Golf Club. They are both remembered with great fondness.

My deepest condolences on your father's passing. He was very special to me, especially because he was one of my first bosses at Shell's Montreal East Refinery. We worked closely together in Toronto at 505 University in 1966-67 and it was he who taught my entire family to use chopsticks along with introducing us to authentic chinese food in Toronto. We stayed connected throughout the years and it was always a pleasure meeting for lunch and talking with him. He will be missed.
