Edward Deratnay Obituary

Edward "Eddie" DERATNAY

Our beloved Eddie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 30, 2016, at the age of 80. Eddie will be deeply missed by his daughter Lynn Bond (James), sons Paul (Penney) and Mark (Peggy) and his grandchildren Carolyn, David, Matthew, Sarah Ann, Aiden and Austin. He will be lovingly remembered by his adoring sisters Jackie Haddad (Sam) and Diane Deratnay, as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. At 3 months Eddie came to Canada with his parents from Syria, settling in London, Ontario where he spent his earliest years. Eddie attended both Upper Canada College and the University of Western Ontario where he forged enduring friendships that lasted a lifetime. In his sporting years Eddie enjoyed playing tennis, squash, golf and cricket. When his playing days were over Eddie became his grandchildren's number one fan, always cheering them on and supporting them in every endeavour. Eddie was an optimist with a kind word for everyone and a gentle soul who was taken too soon. You will live in our hearts forever; in loving you we are truly blessed.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Neuro Team at Sunnybrook for enabling Eddie's safe discharge home and Gillian Carter from CCAC, the St. Elizabeth nurses and Dr. Jennifer Shapiro who ensured Eddie's last days were peaceful and comfortable. Visitation will be held at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road (east gate entrance) on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. and Friday, October 7, 2016 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Eddie's funeral will follow the Friday visitation at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre and will commence at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Pancreatic Cancer Canada. Please visit www.etouch.ca for online condolences, donations and more information.
