ELLEN JAFFE Obituary

JAFFE, ELLEN Ellen Jaffe died on March 16, 2022, a day after her 77th birthday, in Toronto, Ontario. Ellen's passion was writing and she found immense joy in working with others to explore creativity. Three days before her death, a reading of Ellen's poetry was held in her honour, which she received as a gift exemplifying her life's work, and can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbI1122yYNo Ellen was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and was fierce in making the most of every day she had. Her family is forever appreciative of Dr. Chen and the team at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, whose treatment gave Ellen three years of happiness, as well as the palliative team at Bridgepoint Hospital, who provided her with dignity, comfort, and safety during her final days. Ellen is survived by her loving partner, Roger Gilbert, who was by her side every day she took on her cancer. Ellen loved and will be missed by Roger's children, Terri, Vance, and Simon, and grandchildren Alexis, Sydney, and Cameron. Ellen was admired and will be remembered by her beloved, her son, Joe Bitz, whose life is a reflection on the outstanding traits Ellen provided as a parent. Ellen had never-ending love for Joe's partner Christina, and boys Emilio and Elijah. Too numerous to name, a special acknowledgment to all of Ellen's friends who meant the world to her. Ellen's legacy will be commemorated by The Ontario Poetry Society with the Ellen S. Jaffe Humanist Award for Poetry, which was an honour she was fortunate enough to be advised of before her death. Ellen's charities of choice were: Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International, the Canadian Cancer Society, TVOntario, Tarragon Theatre, Daily Bread Food Bank, the David Suzuki Foundation, and the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Ellen lived a life worth living and even at the end was filled with love. Her family and friends are grateful for having of had her to travel the road. Condolences may be left at www.aftercare.org From Ellen: When you lose someone you love, They return gradually, shyly, to your heart, Growing roots, then flowers, Cherished, delicate, visible Only to you. Ellen and I became friends in nursery school at age 3 and lost touch about ten years later. We reconnected about two years ago during Covid to share memories (and pictures!). I had reached out to her because I had long wondered where life's journey would take this bright, creative child who loved to write and create wonderful stories. There she was, an established writer: no surprise. I was so glad we were able to re-establish our friendship during her brave fight with cancer. (Ellen is second from the right in the front row; I am on her left.)

I am sad to hear that Ellen Jaffe died and glad that she had three years after her diagnosis to live fully and visit her son and his family and be with her much loved partner. Ellen did a lot of good in this world. She had a kind heart, and her poetry reached many people. She will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to Ellen's family and friends.

Ellen was a remarkable individual with whom I'd had the privilege of sharing the mic at many a poetry reading (including my own). The person (like the poetry) was kind, gracious and beautifully lyrical.

Rest in peace, fellow poet

We were lucky when she would come to a writing workshop . She encouraged us all about all our writing and whenever I had writers block with one gentle suggestion would open the flood gates it was such a joy and Honor to be in her presence. Thank you Ellen for your company and guidance , every time I pick up pen and paper I will think of you. I will miss you.

"I will miss seeing her face and hearing her voice, and knowing that she was always there, even when afar...
She has crossed a river that I must wait to cross before I see her again.
When I see a river I will think of her"
Terry Kay.

May we traverse, in time, the crags and slopes of sorrow, to come at last into that beautiful valley of peace and revelation, where the flowers of her memory bloom forever.

"She is dwelling now
not in this care-laden world of man,
but there where only peace and love avow
again together with her dearest ones"
V.A.
Our dear Ellen will forever live in us through her
always inspiring poems. Her loving, caring ways,

Ellen was a regular contributor to our Ontario Arts Review website (44 articles) including one presented by Nunavut's Qaggio Collective entitled "KIVIUQ" which attracted appreciative letters from Indigenous chiefs across Canada. She was erudite, insightful and her submissions never needed editing! She was a delight and will be missed. Our condolences to all her family and numerous friends.
