Emil Orsini Obituary

DR. EMIL CHRISTOPHER ORSINI (1955 - 2008) It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Emil. He passed away suddenly while on vacation with his wife Joanne in Denmark on Friday, October 3, 2008. Emil will forever be remembered as a passionate man who seized each day living life to the fullest. Full of energy and love, Emil cherished his family and friends. He was a dedicated family man, skilled and gifted Orthopedic Surgeon, talented athlete, natural coach and teacher, as well as being a great friend to all. As an avid learner, Emil sought out challenges always giving his personal best. As Emil balanced his medical profession, time with family and friends, daily workouts, he did so with humour, love, and a luminous smile which was an inspiration to all. Sharing 26 years of marriage and 32 years as loving companion and best friend to his wife Joanne (Symsyk), Emil will be lovingly remembered as a devoted and caring husband. As an enthusiastic and fun loving dad, Emil adored his three children: Michael, Karin, and Christiane and will be remembered as the greatest father. Emil deeply loved his 82 year old mother Josephine Orsini (Giulianelli), and his late father Basil V. Orsini. He was a loving son-in-law to Laurie Symsyk, and the late John Symsyk. Emil was brother and friend to Basil Jr. (Dianne), Martin, Paul, Elaine (Giacomo), Patricia, Stephen (Barbara), Elinor (Andrew), David (Kim), Arthur (Elinor), and Linda (Gord) and dear friend to sister-in-law Deb Loughead (Dan). Emil gave special attention and took time to connect to his twenty-six nieces and nephews, seven great-nieces and nephews and was admired and loved by all. Providing exceptional care to all his patients, Dr. Emil Orsini was a much loved and highly respected Orthopedic Surgeon at North York General Hospital for the past eighteen years. Our family would like to express our immense appreciation to the doctors and nurses at the Rigshospitalet Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark for their dedication to, and their care of Emil during his final days. Thank you Emil for we have been blessed to have had you in our lives. We have been very privileged to have known and loved you. Your love made everyone feel special. Emil, you will be deeply missed by the multitude of lives you have touched. You will always live in our hearts as we remember your motto: "Work hard, play harder!" Visitations will be held at the Newediuk Funeral Home, 2058 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke (north of Hwy. 401), on Sunday, October 12 and Monday, October 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday 14 October 2008, 11:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Parish, 2305 Bloor Street West, Toronto (east of Jane St.). Memorial donations may be made to North York General Hospital, Don Mills Surgical Unit, and the West Parry Sound Health Centre.

I was reading the Ottawa Citizen this morning and read a story about a Uof O professor Orsini....and that sparked my memory of Emilio Orsini a fellow that I first met way back in the late 50's maybe early 60's....Emilio Orsini was the owner of Swansea Construction located on Rogers Road....He had a son Basil and a nephew Frank. Frank died one evening while returning from the jobsite in Toronto's West end...My dad was seated beside Frank when he left this world that evening. Emilio was Emil the Surgeons grandfather .and son of Basil. I never knew Emil the surgeon but I do know a bit of the Orsini family history. Condolences to the Orsini family ( albeit 5 years following the loss of this very fine fellow). Thanks to the power of this technology of ours today our memories remain alive.....

Thank you for creating the Orsini Scholarship Fund that honours Emil Orsini's dedication to health care. The Orsini Family, together with Dr. Maurice Bent, Chief of Orthopaedics, decided to create a summer scholarship for medical students at the Hospital to help improve the hospital's orthopaedic practice.

Doctor Ted Rumble, a fellow orthopaedic surgeon at NYGH, touched us all when he said: “He was an outstanding surgeon but also extremely popular. He had an incredible sense of fun.”

He was a great loving brother.

Love Steve

Dr.Emil Orsini wasn't only a good orthopod, but a great hockey player. He played against the NHL oldtimers in 1990 and 1991. He has joined other passing members of that team, Dr Bill forder, Dr. Gary Stoick. There was the the Sault Saint Marie hockey tourney in 1988. Good Bless Your Soul! I will see you in heaven. My deepest (and belated) condolences to the family of Dr. Orsini. I was very surprised and saddened to learn about his passing when I tried to contact him. He performed surgery on my knee in 2000 and did an excellent job in assisting me on my road to recovery. Sad to see such a devoted and gifted doctor depart at such an early age.

WE are deeply shocked when we heard the very sad news of Dr.Orsini. Our prayers are with his dear loving family and we pray that may Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen.
Our daughter was treated by him for her knee injury and she was supposed to go for her knee surgeory this year by Dr.Orsini.
Dr. Orsini was a very kind, compassionate, caring, loving, friendly, generous, very helping doctor who always thought about his patient well-being.
sometime in August 2009 I called the office to book an appointment and the phone number was disconnected and then I went to the office and saw the sign. I asked other Dr's.offices and the secretaries over their said that his office is closed down.
We will appreicate if some one can kindly let us know about our daughters file from his office and that who took over Dr.Orsinis practice my e-mail is [email protected]
Once again Dr.Orsini will be missed by many many many people who came in his contact.
Good Bye Dr.Orsini and May your soul rest in eternal peace.

Dr. Emil Orsini helped our family in very tough times. Our son Ben was born with a deformed foot. Dr. Orsini corrected the problem with a complicated surgical procedure when Ben was just 5 months old. Dr. Orsini was a caring, compassionate man at a time when we needed help and support. He remained an important influence in Ben's life and has helped Ben accomplish his dreams. Now, at 18, Ben is aiming to become a doctor. We hope that Ben will be able to carry on Emil's legacy. Our condolences to his family - we know that he will be sorely missed. RIP Emil Orsini.

I consider myself very lucky to have been persuaded by Andrew Laffey, Dr Orsini's brother in law to contact this great surgeon with respect to my left foot. I had many visits with Dr. Orsini. I bragged to all my friends on how he called each patient by name. He had the most wonderful manner, and was so calming.

For me, Dr. Orsini, you gave me a new life, able to walk, pain free. Your input prior to the surgery with respect to home care, etc. was invaluable. I just learned this weekend of this terrible news. My condolences to your family.

I am saddened to hear Dr. Orsini's death. I met him only three times and had brief conversations only. He did surgery on my left leg after I had an accident in July this year.
The last time I saw him (looking at the long list of questions in my hand) he just winked at me and said he has to go for an urgent surgery. This I guess was his style of taking things easy. He told me to take appointment for September 29, not knowing that he will not be able to meet me on that date.
I am sorry that I couldn't know him more for he sure was extra ordinary (as I have come to know by reading the guest book).
May his soul rest in peace and God give his family the strength to bear this loss.

I am in total shock at hearing of Dr. Orsini's very sudden and tragic passing. He was my surgeon for three surgeries first an ankle fusion and then both a knee and a hip total replacement. Each time his extreme skill, caring and friendly manner made the experience a good one and improved my quality of life. As I recovered from each surgery he would smile and say "Just call me when you need me!" and I did. He will be seriously missed by all those patients lucky enough to have benefitted from his skills. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. May God love, protect and bless you all!

I am so grateful to have met and known Dr Orsini. As a patient of his for several years, I was impressed with the way he cared for his patients, his understanding of their pain and his excellence as a surgeon. In August of 2007 Dr. Orsini replaced my right hip which has improved my life drastically. I am deeply saddened that a man so young, so vital and so incredibly talented has been taken from you, his family, and from us, his patients.
My sincere condolences to all of you that loved him. He will be terribly missed as a doctor and a person. God Bless you all at this difficult time.

Just wanted to add our names to the long list of admirers of EMIL...
We knew him casually through our friend Dorinda who has worked for him for many years.
Every time that we saw him, we were always impressed with the twinkle in his eyes. Somehow, it was obvious that this was a man enjoying his life, happy with his family and fulfilled in his work.
How can we comprehend why that twinkle has been extinguished?
We add our names to the long list of people who will miss him...
The world was better because of his presence...
Our most sincere sympathies to Joanne, her three children and all his family and friends....

It has taken so long to compose this - I have started 3 or 4 times -I don't know how to express my sadness. Emil was such a special person in my life. He employed me 17 years ago after a very brief interview. He was the most wonderful person to work with/for. I'll miss our parking lot conversations after a long day of work and hearing him thank me daily for all I do and also the anticipation of his running into the office with a waiting room full of patients half an hour late Emil was very suportive of my physical limitations in the office so he encouraged Joanne, Michael, Karin and Christianne to help me and he loved having them in the office to work with him. He was always a hit at our parties with our friends(especially the ladies) surrounding him in conversation.
But most of all, we'll miss his wonderful smile.

Dr. Orsini operated on my mother's shoulder many years ago and it was so successful that she never even talked about having had this operation. Now in her 80's she needs a hip replacement. When she learned it would be Dr. Orsini she felt 100% confident that he would take away her pain and make her new again. When we learned of his death it seemed like a light had gone out of our home. He was a great doctor who had the gift to make every patient feel special. We offer our prayers to his family.

Many condolences to the family. An inspirational family man, Dr. Orsini repaired my leg, badly broken while playing soccer when I myself was a medical student. I told him what an avid player I was, and when he saw me in follow-up - I told him I would be playing on it again soon. Knowing he wasn't going to stop me he smiled, gave me a wink and said - "You shouldn't play on that leg any more.... score me some goals!" I'm still playing and remember those words every single time I am able walk back onto the pitch. I thank him for his skill in giving me my leg back, and for his caring as a Doctor that I carry with me always.

Prepared by the Orsini family and delivered by one of his brothers, Steve Orsini

Celebrating Emil’s Great Life

We are here to pay tribute, to honour and to celebrate the wonderful life of Dr. Emil Orsini.

He was a loving son, a great brother, a devoted husband and father, a fun-loving uncle, a compassionate friend and a dedicated doctor.

Emil, while you have left us way too soon, we are so grateful that the Lord gave you to us in the first place. We have been very privileged to have known and loved you and for you to have loved us. You have left a unique and wonderful legacy. We are eternally grateful to you.

I recall reading sometime ago that when you are young, you tend to measure your accomplishments by the things that you do. But as you get older, you measure your accomplishments by the people you have touched. Emil, you have lived to a very ripe old age on both accounts.

The outpouring of love from family, friends and colleagues has been overwhelming and reflects the number of people you have touched so dearly.

Emil, words can’t describe how much we will miss you. We will miss your warm and contagious smile. We will miss your sense of humour and your excitement for life. You never obsessed with the past nor worried about the future. You just lived in total wonderment of the present. You lived life to the fullest.

Emil was a devoted family man who centered his life around his wife and children. He was a loving husband to Joanne. They were a perfect couple and spent 32 wonderful years together. Emil’s face would always light up when Joanne was around. They lived for each other, worked side-by-side, travelled together and experienced all of life’s blessings together.

Emil was a dedicated and loving father to Michael, Karin and Christiane -- they were his pride and joy. He loved his children dearly and ensured that they had the best in life. He instilled in them the wonderful qualities he lived by. They meant the world to him and he was extremely proud of them.

He was also a loving son to Josephine and his late father Basil Orsini as well as his Mother-in-Law Laurie and his late Father-in-Law John Symsyk. He loved his parents as much as any son could. He would frequently visit and would call his Mom every morning, which rivaled the sisters and put big pressure on the rest of us brothers.

About 24 years ago, when the medical system was reluctant to perform heart surgery on our Dad given his very low chance of survival, Emil did everything he could to secure life-saving surgery for our Dad. Thanks to Emil’s perseverance, our Dad enjoyed 19 more years of life. For that we are eternally grateful.

Emil was a great brother. He reached out to family members on special occasions and made each and everyone of us feel very special. He was kind and generous, especially with his most precious gift – his time. We will miss a dear, loving and devoted brother. I will also miss a best friend, my Best Man and a great man.

Emil was an exceptional athlete and coach. He excelled at all sports and enjoyed them most when playing with family and friends. Even during competitive hockey, he always wanted his brothers to play on the same line with him even though we couldn’t keep up. When we were playing golf, he allowed me to cheat to keep the game close – which I took him up on more than he realized.

Emil celebrated life at every opportunity. He treasured close friendships and constantly reached out to friends and colleagues. He was compassionate to people he didn’t even know.

At work, Emil was dedicated and passionate about serving his patients. According to his own colleagues, he was a gifted orthopedic surgeon who was often given the "tough" cases and was known as the "go to guy". He would go out of his way to support the nurses, hospital staff and doctors to improve their lives and the lives of their patients.

Emil, you have left us a rich history of memories that will carry on in our hearts and minds for generations to come.

Emil, we love you. We will miss you. And we are eternally grateful to you.

On Monday October 6th, my mom called me at work to tell me that Roger called her and told her that Dr. Orsini had passed away.

I was totally numb with shock.

When I last him a few months ago he was looking fine.

Back in May 2007 he operated on my mom knee and he was scheduled to do her next OP on Oct 31st of this year.

He was a real joker, he kept telling me that my mom will find a new boyfriend once her knees were okay and she will no longer need me.

On behalf of my mother (Bibi Yassin) I extend our condolences to the entire Orsini family. May God grant him eternal peace and bless his family. He will be missed by many many people.

We were shocked to hear of Dr. Orsini's passing. He did bilateral knee replacements last year on my uncle. He had post op complications and Dr. Orsini stayed after a long day and operated again without passing it on to another surgeon. He was obviously highly dedicated to his patients and we found him to be the most professional and kindest doctor that we ever met. His passing has touched us and we are so sorry for his loss.

Dr. Orsini operated on my mother's knee a few years ago; she was very sad and cried when I told her of Dr. Orsini's death. Such a wonderful, compassionate and caring person and excellent doctor; he always put a smile on her face. Our condolences to all the Orsini family.

My sincere sympathy to Mrs. Orsini and family. I was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Orsini. Three years ago I met him and was scheduled to have surgery on my knee. I had occasion to come back to his office for many follow up appointments over the past 3 years and as recently as this past August. He always had a smile, comforting words and sometimes funny things to say. I will miss him. His passing is a great loss for his family, his staff, his patients and the medical profession. My heartfelt sympathy to Roger and office staff.

My deepest condolences to the Orsini family. He will be greatly missed by all of us at NYGH-OR. He took the time to know everyone and even gave us all nicknames. I will forever miss his smile, his "down to earth" attitude, him dragging his feet in everyday with his backpack on his back and seeing him riding his bike across Leslie St. to and from his office and the hospital. He touched so many lives and I was fortunate enough to have been one of them. Thank you Emil!!!!!!

Our condolences to the Orsini Family. As a collegue he was one of a kind. Never too busy to fit in another urgent referral or fracture from my office. As a friend, always there for you. He looked after my son in 2005 with a fractured leg from a squash game. They had an instant bond for the love of science and the game of squash. He was a tremendous role model for his patients and the medical community.
We will miss you,
Dr. Janet Rak and the Teich Family

Dear Joanne,

Even though I haven't seen Emil in a few years I think of Emil every now and then, and can only imagine how you and your family feel at this time. Emil was a great guy that I always remember as being a great squash player, caring friend and all around nice guy. My 25 year med. school reunion is coming up next month and I can bet many of us will be sharing stories of Emil. I certainly feel a void now that Emil is gone but I am also reminded of the great times we shared. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

My deepest condolences to the Orsini family.

My fondest memory of the doc was when he would tell me that whenever he operates on me, he gains another gray hair. What I wouldn't give to see him with a full head of gray.

You will indeed be so sorrowfully missed.

Respectfully

I have come to know Dr. Orsini as a very passionate, loving, patient, kind, warm-hearted and caring person. As a surgeon he was one of the best I have seen. I was very fortunate to be a patient of his, and got the priviledge to work with such a great person and surgeon in the O.R. He was a very dear and wonderful man, I will surely miss him. I will always remember him by his Motto in the O.R., "Work Hard, Play Hard, Life Is Too Short". These words of his will live on within all of us. To his dear family and friends my dearest sympathy and prayers goes out to you all, especially his beautiful wife and children. Dr. Orsini Lives on in our Hearts Forever.

Dr. Orsini was a very special, kind hearted, compassionate person who was family oriented. It was so nice of him to have my 97 year old father transferred to NYGH so that I could spend time during the day with him. I am an employee at NYGH. My deepest sympathy goes to the Orsini family.

To Joanne Orsini & Family:
Sincerest sympathy to you all. Though I have lost contact with Emil over the years, I fondly remember his friendship, the days at the cottage, his tolerance of my abysmal golf, and his encouragment while running with him. He was a wonderful person and you will find strength in his love and spirit which will be with you wherever you go.
Bless you all.

Dr Orsini was a wonderful person and a gifted surgeon. He singlehandedly gave me my life back after my emergency back surgery at the age of 33. His care, compassion and infinite patience with me after my recovery were the reason that I always made sure everyone knew what an incredible gift to my life he was. He will be sadly missed by all, but for me he will forever live on in my memory as the man who saved my life.

Dr. Orsini single-handedly saved my mom's life by discovering a deadly absyss right by her spine that no one else had discovered, even with numerous tests. He refused to give up, knowing there was something terribly wrong. Without him, I know she would not be here, and so I owe him everything, absolutely everything.
This is truly a tragic loss and my condolences go out to all affected.

Eighteen years spent working with
Emil in the OR at NYGH....what a great experience!! Who else could make you laugh and then frustrate you, but at the end of the day he had you laughing again. Fridays in the OR will not be the same. Our Orthopedic team is now missing one of its key members. Emil, you will be greatly missed. Hallowe'en will not be the same this year!!!.

I will always remember Dr. Orsini for his sense of humor and serenity. It always seem that he loved life and had not a worry in the world. They say you can truly know a person through their eyes but I also think by your aura as well. He will be greatly missed and I hope that God gives his family strength in this time of grief. He is in a better place waiting for all of us.

Dear Family:
I wish to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of a truly unique person. As a Nurse, I have known Emil Orsini since he started at North York General Hospital. I have witnessed how deeply he cared about his patients, and in return how greatly his patients loved him. I can remember him sitting with the nurses in the cafeteria, how he made us laugh, and made a difficult day just a little better. He will be forever loved, respected and missed.

I was quite shocked to hear of Dr. Orsini's passing. I just found out on Sunday, coincidentally, one day after asking my wife if she would think about having him operate on her foot since he did such a great job on her other one a few years back. I personally was thinking about having knee surgery with him and remember meeting with him this past spring for a consultation. He seemed so laid back and relaxed during the appt., which made me feel the same way also. I thought it was exceptional for him to first go over the operation with me personally and then to make sure I knew just what was involved, I watched a video of the procedure. He really seemed to be a happy guy who enjoyed life which makes this that much more shocking.

I remember Emil's huge smile and humour, he was a great guy. Thinking of him brings a smile to my face. We met at Michael Power H.S. and we both attended the University of Waterloo. While at Waterloo I would honk the horn of my car as I drove by the apartment he shared with Dave. Like clockwork I would see Emil’s big wave in the window; he’d never get up from his desk because he was too busy studying, but I’d could always count on this sign of his friendship! I’m truly sorry to hear of his passing. May God bless you now and always.
