I was Eric's editor at Scribner's in New York in the '80s and into the'90s. I am greatly saddened to learn of his death. I admired him so much and was so proud of his books. So many fond memories from visits in NY, Toronto and mystery conventions. Deepest sympathy to Valerie and all the family. Susanne Kirk

I was a classmate and friend of Eric at the University of Manitoba in the early 1950s. Though we only saw each other once, after he'd moved to Toronto, we kept in touch by letter, occasionally, and I will miss him. A few months ago I re-read Always Give a Penny to a Blind Man and wanted to write him a letter telling him how much I admired what someone from such humble origins had achieved. Alas, I never did.
Eric, if you're reading this, I think you're a hell of a guy!

A wonderful teacher and a good man. I remember a time at Ryerson when a student asked a question. Eric paused for a moment and said in the deadpan way he had, "That was a good question, but let me re-phrase it and make it a brilliant one. He will be missed.

To Eric's family - my condolences for your great loss. I was a student of Eric's - Ryerson RTA - back in the early '60s. He was a brilliant teacher and a witty, kind and wonderful person. I have remembered Eric my whole life - a few teachers stay with you like that:remembered fondly - with admiration and gratitude.

Eric was my Uncle , my Mother's youngest brother and the one whom she admired so much. He went on to do so much from their relatively poor surroundings and made a life for himself and family away from the pit that was England in 1950/60's.
It's all in his book. He has left a legacy of writing and student memories. Farewell Eric.

Very sad news. He taught me English at Ryerson. One the best teachers we had.

Eric hired me to teach in the Ryerson English department in the fall of 1966. We were colleagues for thirty years. We talked often about teaching: the agony of a class gone wrong, the desire to be better, the satisfaction that comes with good teaching. We also talked about life, it's difficulties, mysteries and joys. I will always be grateful for his guidance and friendship.

I am so very saddened to hear this news. My memories from growing up next door to the Wrights on Gormley Ave are of a quiet, soft spoken, kind, sincere man with a subtle but wicked sense of humour, high level of intelligence and wry wit. What a lovely man. My sincere condolences to Valerie, Tory, Jess and the extended family.

Just an old neighbor from Gormley Avenue in the '60s where sometimes his kids would wander down and into our sandbox, joining our brood. Pleasant memories.

I have so many fond memories of
Eric from those halcyon Ryerson years. I suspect he and David are already continuing the deep discussion on deconstruction in English literature they had when they last met. At least, I hope they are. Eric was a wonderful, warm talented person.
