My friend Fred Sherratt
David Harrison - May 5 2023
I knew Fred for almost 50 years.
His world was selling commercial time and my world was buying it.
Our world was in a remarkable growth phase. Canadian broadcasting was in the ascendency as were the media budgets our clients needed to invest.
We connected not just as buyer and seller but in a mutual desire to build and develop an industry.
Back then (the 60´s, 70´s and 80´s) there was tremendous collegiality as broadcasters, media buyers and advertisers worked together to build a successful business environment.
Be it commercial regulations, Canadian content, audience measurement or challenging the elephant to the south, it was a tribute to all those in the industry that we managed to make and maintain a thriving environment.
It was on the board of BBM, the audience measurement organization, that I first met Fred and was immediately struck by his leadership skills, charisma and ability to wrangle potentially difficult situations. His fellow broadcasters would most often agree with his suggestions. And, he was usually able to convince us, the buyers, of his good intentions.
His lifetime success in the broadcasting business has been well documented and rewarded by a thankful industry. He rode the wave from a nascent private broadcasting system to the powerhouse it became before the world of the internet and streaming so brutally interfered.
I was proud to call him my friend. Yes, we might disagree as we negotiated our sides of a deal, but we always came out respecting each other´s position.
Fred was a generous man - perhaps not so generous with his staff, some of whom called him "skinflint" Sherratt. But, of course, he had learned the secret to corporate finance from the very formidable Alex Forbes who made sure everyone in the CHUM group respected every dollar all the time. But, personally, Fred was always there to share his good fortune.
My wife Erica and I spent many great times with Fred and his family at his cottage or out for celebrations. We went to France and met his wonderful Mali. We always stayed in touch.
He boat was "Steadfast" and so was he.
The big question now is whether Scaramouche will be able to stay in business!
