FRED SMITH Obituary
FRED WILLIAM SMITH February 28, 1915 to October 5, 2012 At Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Ontario at the age of 97; beloved husband of Helen Lesslie Smith. Fred was born in Verdun, Quebec and lived in Quebec till the late 1950's before moving to Toronto. At the young age of 14, he started working at Canadian National Railway. At 21, Fred met Helen. They were married on April 18, 1942. Shortly after in the same year, Fred enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was stationed in Europe and served for three and a half years. During WWII, he was a wireless navigator in a Mosquito Fighter Bomber aircraft with a two man crew. After the war, Fred returned to work at CN Railway. He held various positions including Manager of General Claims for both CN Railway and Air Canada until retiring in 1980 after fifty-one years of service. Fred was also a long standing member of the Grand Lodge of Quebec and served as Master of his lodge 103. At the time of his passing, Fred and Helen just celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary. Fred was predeceased by his parents Annie and Randall and his two sisters, Ethel and Anne. Fred is survived by his beloved wife Helen, sister-in-law Jean, her two daughters, Helen and Marilyn, and Marilyn's two children, Karmen and Bradley. Fred was cremated on Wednesday, October 10th.
