Frederick BERCHEM Obituary

BERCHEM, Frederick Ronald (Hamish) BA, MA, CD, AdeC After a good innings and although "packed and ready to depart but not peppering to do so," Hamish passed away suddenly in Mexico, by the sea, a place he loved and visited annually with his wife, Pat. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years Patricia and his sons, Anthony (Cheryl) and Alan. Survived and greatly missed by his daughters Fiona (Grant) and Isabel (Alan), his grandchildren (Natalie, Scott, Katrina, Megan, Jenna, Alexandra and Miranda), his brother Ian, sister-in-law Anne (Alan) and his nieces and nephews. Born in Scotland, Hamish was a submariner with the Royal Navy before transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy. He was Commanding Officer, HMCS York, 1970-1973. He held an Honours BA and MA in History and English from the University of Toronto and taught High School at Don Mills and Bathurst Heights Collegiate in North York. He later worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Burlington, Ontario before retiring. In retirement, he continued his love of writing and painting, becoming a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists (CSMA) and spending time in Picton and Halifax. He was as well-known for his personal Christmas card artwork as his anecdotes. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends from coast to coast, sharing memories and laughter. His memory will live on through his published works, illustrations, paintings and writings. The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 1300 hours at Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church, 230 St. Clair Ave W. Toronto. In the early 1970's, I sailed as a very young NAVO onboard Gate Vessels to Labrador. I was privileged to have Hamish as my CO. For several summers he was my mentor and the lessons he imparted stayed with me my entire career in the Naval Reserve. I have nothing but great respect for him. He will be remembered with fondness by a generation of young sailors who were lucky to have sailed with him.

Hamish was a gentleman and a gentle and really nice man. And he was a submariner. Some would say, 'Go figure'.

When those we love depart this world
and leave us here to pine
the empty space they leave behind
and darkness intertwine.
Hope's candle is no longer lit
yet deep inside we know
that they would smile and quietly
urge us to let it go.

He shall be remembered.
