FREDERICK JOHN MAZZA Died peacefully, just shy of his 90th at the Niagara-on- the-Lake Hospital on May 6, 2012. Fred was born in Toronto and served with the Governor General's Horse Guards in the Second World War. After the war he joined the Toronto Fire Department and built a house on Toronto Island. Retiring from the Fire Department in 1970, he moved to a new home he built in Cannington, ON, and in 1980 relocated to Niagara-on- the-Lake, where he has resided for the last thirty years. An accomplished athlete, Fred was a renowned fastball pitcher in semi-professional leagues in Toronto in the late 40s and 50s, sailed from the Queen City Yacht Club in the 60's, was a member of the Niagara-on- the-Lake Golf Club, where he was Club Captain in the mid 80s, and excelled at darts and billiards with the Royal Canadian Legion. Fred is predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Sarah, his brother Albert, his grandson Stuart, and is survived by his wife Jean, his sisters Millie and Betty, his son Ron (Pam), and grandchildren Graham, Susan and Catherine, and son Rob (Za), and grandchild Stephen (Joanna), and many nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Fred's Life will take place at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club on Tuesday, May 22nd at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the NOTL Community Palliative Care Services or to the volunteer auxiliary of the NOTL Hospital.
