GARY CLIPPERTON Obituary

CLIPPERTON, GARY May 14, 1943 - May 2, 2023 Athlete, musician, teacher, traveller, storyteller, builder, conductor, father, husband, brother, uncle, grandpa, friend and community leader. Gary lived a vibrant life full of adventure, curiosity, smiles and passion. Born in Simcoe County to Graydon and Doris Clipperton, Gary was the eldest of five. His family moved to Streetsville when he was a baby. He met the love of his life, Cathy Hampton, in high school, whom he married in '67. Gary played varsity football for University of Toronto, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup in '65 before playing for the Calgary Stampeders in '67. His football career ended due to injury and he moved on to teaching. As a teacher and coach, he inspired and encouraged students at Meadowvale, Lorne Park, Streetsville, Mayfield and Cawthra schools. A tireless community leader, he was on the steering committee to build the Meadowvale Theatre and he pioneered the Bread & Honey Festival. He was recognized as Mississauga's Musician of the Year in '85, and was inducted to the Mississauga Legends Row in 2017. And of course, MUSIC. It was his happy place, and he loved a medley. Gary was the founder and conductor of JUSTUS and in its 40-year tenure, the choral group became a source of joy for all of Mississauga. At the invitation of late Mayor McCallion, JUSTUS travelled to World Expo in Japan in 2012 to perform. He was a fearless traveller, always interested in the scenic route. He gave the best hugs and had a contagious smile. He took pride in reading stories to his grandchildren, loved to BBQ a feast for friends around the pool, could garden all summer long and he loved to canoe. He lived his last five years with Frontotemporal Dementia, and died two weeks short of his 80th birthday. He will be missed by Cathy; and his children, Kelly (Joseph), Kate and Kasey (Erin); and grandchildren, Ariel and Eilis. Predeceased by his brother, Jon; and sister-in-law, Peggi. He will live on in his siblings, Rob, Michael and Carol; sister-in-law, Marie; and his extended loving family and expansive community of friends. He touched a lot of people's lives. Thank you to the spectacular team at TRI and the loving care at Wesburn Lodge. A tribute will be held at Streetsville United Church on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Consider a donation in Gary's name to Alzeheimer's Canada (alzheimer.ca/en).

My condolences to Mr. Clipperton's family and friends. I had him as a teacher at Cawthra, and always enjoyed his classes. He challenged us to think outside the box, and his passion for the environment has always stayed with me. He will be missed.

In 1967, I spent the summer at the University of Calgary. We would go to see the Stampeders practice. I'm convinced that one day when I caught an errant football it was Gary who came over to retrieve it. Probably not, but I'm sure he was there. Then Walter and I moved to Streetsville that September to teach, (we didn't know each other then), so Gary has always been on our radar. Cathy and family, we send our condolences and thank you and Gary for your music ministry at our church and in the community.

I believe that your Gary, was my counselor at Camp New Moon circa 1963. He took me out on my first canoe trip (Algonquin Park -- the Southern Circuit). The next year he took my brother out on his first canoe trip. We are still canoeing. Gary was a great guy. Mark and I both pangs of sadness.

Much love to Cathy and all the Clips. They broke the mold when they made Gary. A terrific guy, and what an inspiring life he lived.

I loved Gary very much. He was part of my life from the day I was born as a next door neighbour and oldest sibling of my best friend. He was a youth leader and choir master in our Church. We loved him as his energy was infectious! He and Cathy were so cool! We then joined Justus and fell in love with their children. He was a Prince among men!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Gary was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. My alter ego found a home for the 20 years I sang with JUSTUS. There has been nothing to replace the fun, joy and work that went into performing with the group. Bless you Gary for all of that.

So saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. C. I had the total luck and pleasure of growing up beside the Clippertons and Mr. C will always hold a huge and incomparable place in my life. He was a tireless, exuberant, wonderful man. I know Mrs. C and Kell and Kate and Gaff will miss him so dearly.

Very sorry to hear of Gary's passing. I remember Gary as a great musician and fantastic centre on the Streetsville High School Football team. Although we were not close in later years I always felt a kinship with Gary as a smiling and supportive friend all through high school. Winston ,"Bogi" Uytenbogaart

On behalf of the Mississauga Pops we would like to send our condolences to the family. We have wonderful memories of Gary, Cathy and all the members of Justus performing our joint Christmas Sing celebrations at Eden United Church throughout the years. Gary brought so much delight to all the little children in the audience (including ours) clamouring up to sing Rudolph with him!
