GARY HUNT Obituary

DR. GARY WILLIAM HUNT Dr. Gary William Hunt, age 69, passed away in Toronto, December 30, 2013 after joyful Christmas celebrations with sons Tim (Natalie) and JJ (Lois), grandsons Owen and Angus and brothers Robert (Mary), Glyndwr (Anne) and sister Nola (late James). Just read of Gary's passing in the Weston Alumni Newsletter. Went to High School with Gary and Lakeshore Teacher's College. Ran into him on several occasions at reunions. Always great memories of our high school days and early teaching career. My sympathy goes out to the whole family.

I will never forget you Gary. You came to our department to teach elementary science. You filled our dept with fun. You played a huge part in bringing together my husband Gary and I and for that I will always be in your debt. You attended our wedding in 1974, almost 40 years ago. What a wonderful person you were Gary. Thank you for being you.

When my career finishes, Ill look back to the summers at Howard Park, as not only the best teaching years, but some of the best times in my life. Gary was the reason it all happened. He was just
a superb individual and made us all feel so unique and special. They broke the mold with Gary - there just are so few people like him in leadership positions today. Thanks Gary. You were just a great person.

My condolences to Tim, JJ and their family. I grew up knowing the Hunt family and Gary was a big support to me at the beginning of my journey in teaching. When I was applying to the various faculties of Education, Gary took the time to read over my applications and told me "Shannon, you are writing too much like a textbook. Write from here", tapping his chest above his heart. I was devastated, but went home, rewrote the applications and went back for round 2! I remember his big smile as he read through my application and was pleased. Thank you Dr. Gary Hunt. May you rest in peace and peace be with your family.

I will always remember Gary Hunt dressed in his wonderful costume at the Santa Claus parade party for children at FEUT every December. His sense of fun was contagious. Kids and teachers loved him. My condolences to his family at this sad time.

Working with Gary and Jim Fair a bazillion years ago at FEUT was incredible fun and laughter mixed in with some extraordinary work. Then, when Mike Deineka and Gary and I wrote a book called Ages 9 through 12, we broke a mold... with Gary's connections with OPSTF and Mike's connections with the Ministry of Education, we created the first joint publication project in Ontario between a teacher's federation and the Ministry.Together, we did keynotes and workshops all around Ontario. We couldn't believe that we were being paid to have so much fun!
That's the Gary I'll remember. The one who would cajole and giggle and burst out laughing with faculty and more importantly, with the students.
Have a good rest, Gar.

When I think of FEUT I immediately think of Gary Hunt! He always put the intetests of students first and his many life long lessons help model my classes every day. I spent numerous hours with Gary on Student Council, many committees, and after our intramural hockey games. I can honestly say his kindness, passion for teaching, and genuine concern for every persons' wellbeing is unparalleled. He will be missed by many but his legacy will continue as his influence carries on in many of the lessons that we teach!

I will miss Gary immensely. He was one of my dad's best friends and he was always cheerful and outgoing working at FEUT. Gary also gave the eulogy at my dad's funeral and did such a remarkable job. I will miss him and my love goes out to JJ and Tim and their families at this difficult time.

Gary's enthusiasm, leadership skills and his dedication to a wide variety of causes will be remembered by the numerous people he touched. His smile and laughter were sincere and enjoyed by everyone he made contact with. I like to think that his passion for travel will be ongoing as the energy of his spiritual soul is now free to roam the heavens.

What a fine educator. What a fine leader and example for teachers to follow. What a fine friend. Gary and Naomi discovered San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 2000 and shared their Toller Cranston rental with me the following year. I never left. Now the two of them can get together again and catch up on old times.

Gary was a special human being. He chaired our Board at Southampton with unfailing energy, commitment, and intelligence. He demonstrated the power of generosity and kindness through his actions. He created a community in a building of disparate individuals, couples, and families. His loss is huge. I shall remember him for his humanity, his great laugh, and the warmth of his presence.

When I first came to Toronto and to FEUT, Gary instantly 'hugged' me (and all of us) with relentless kindness and that from ear-to-ear smile . His passion for what is important for students, and our FEUT students made such a difference to all of us. I will remember that 'he got' it; too few didn't.
