GEORGE GIRGIS Obituary

DR. GEORGE ROFAIL GIRGIS, B.Sc, Ph.D It is with overwhelming sadness that the family of Dr. George Girgis announces his sudden passing after a short but devastating illness on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. George is survived by his wife of 51 years Dr. Mona Girgis; his daughters Marian (Denis Ellickson) and Sarah; granddaughter Georgia Ellickson; brother Ramses and sister Phoebe and many relatives and friends in Canada, the United States and Egypt. George was born on July 21, 1938 in Cairo, Egypt to Rofail and Lily Girgis. George met his future bride Mona Tadros, at the age of 13 at the English Mission College in Cairo. George and Mona were married in 1963. George graduated from Cairo University, School of Pharmacy and worked as a Consultant at the American Navy Research Centre in Cairo. George and Mona immigrated to Canada in 1966. George became a licensed Pharmacist in Canada and obtained his Ph.D from York University in Biochemistry after which he spent time lecturing at the University. Later on he went to work at Seneca College as the Director of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology which was a program he developed. He also had written many scientific publications over the course of his career. George was a highly educated scholar and academic. However, George's greatest achievements were his love for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and his devotion to his family and devotion to God. George was a particularly kind, sensitive and intelligent man who loved to debate and never ceased to be curious about the world and the people in it. The family wishes to thank the wonderful professionals and staff of North York General Hospital. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Place Presbyterian Church, 8 Chapel Place, Markham, Ontario. Interment will immediately follow at Westminster Cemetery at 5830 Bathurst Street. A reception will be held at Chapel Place following interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Missions of Rural Egypt or to the Arabic Assemblies of God.

My dear Mona, it has been years that we have not contacted each other. I also lost touch with your brother Ibrahim. Nevertheless I feel we are just as close as we were when we were kids at the EMC. My deepest condolences for the loss of George.

My dear Mona, it has been years that we didn't hear from each other but nevertheless I feel we are just as close as we were when we were kids at the EMC. Hearing that George passed away was a shock, for although we know that we all will sometime go home to our creator yet it is always a sad event to say goodbye to someone dear. George was God's child and therefore we know where he is going to. May he intercede for us at the throne of our Lord and Savior Jezus Christ. Nawal and I Pray that God gives you the strength to deal with this löss and keep you safe in his hands. Our condolences to the children and grandchildren that we never met and to Ramsis and Phoebe if they still remember us.

My heartfelt condolences to Mona and the entire family. When Joe and Mona arrived in Canada in 1966, they rented an apartment close to mine in Don Mills, Ontario. We got to see each other quite frequently. I found Joe to be an extremely bright and personable friend. Unfortunately, we lost touch when I went to graduate school in Hamilton, Ontario and later moved to the US. But I frequently think of Joe and Mona, and my heart goes to the family on this sad, sad loss. But the Good Lord will take care of Joe.

I am terribly saddened to hear of George's passing. As a graduate of the Seneca Pharmaceutical Technology program (1980), George was one of my Professors (Teaching Masters as they called them in the day). But George was more than a teacher to me. He was a coach, mentor, confidante and friend. In many ways, George helped me to discover myself. I owe much of my performance and success during my 3 years at Seneca to George's patience and kind wisdom, as well as his teaching skill. Indeed, even my postgraduate path was heavily influenced by the time I spent with George. I will never forget George and there will always be some of George in everything that I do.

My deepest condolences to George's family and friends. May you find comfort and solace in knowing how George's life so positively and profoundly affected so many people. Many of us are standing on George's shoulders.
