GEORGE GRANT Obituary

GRANT, GEORGE EDWARD May 3, 1936 - November 15, 2022 Son of Sandy MacLean Grant and Violet Isabella Morrison (both deceased). After graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in Library Science, George worked briefly in Toronto before accepting a Library job in England. Returning after three years, he "fell into his dream job" at the Central Reference Library in Toronto, in the Fine Arts Department from 1965-2001. His passions were the ballet, the opera, theatre, books, and cats; Fluffy, Peter, Perry, Lady Jane, Victoria, Alberta, Gucci and Angel have been his loved companions. George will truly be missed by his nieces, Marilyn Cowie (Alan Schwieger) and Diana Wasdell (Chris Casswell); and his dear friends with whom he shared many dinners and conversations. As per his wishes, there was no visitation or funeral. Cremation has already taken place. If you would like to make a donation to your favourite charity in his memory, that would be wonderful.

On behalf of my mother Mary Einhorn (nee Morrison), my wife Angela and myself, we express our sincere condolences. George was very kind to Mary, corresponding with great stories of his travels and life. Angela and I are grateful that we've been also been able to correspond with George these past few years.

Geez. Where to start. I first met George in the early 1980s, when I started to work in the old Fine Arts Dept. at Metro Reference Library. He was an esteemed colleague, became a mentor, and we became allies and friends for life. We both liked to travel and George was always keen to share his likes and dislikes about his latest adventure. George was generous in sharing his knowledge and lived experience about the fine arts in general with his library colleagues. Because I was 15 years his junior, I sometimes thought he took he "under his wing", as the expression goes. We both enjoyed our forays into collection: we compared and shared matchbooks that we brought back to Canada from our trips abroad. He seriously collected Edward Gorey, I Robin Hood. Etcetera, etcetera. After we retired, both in 2001, we shared a meal at a `nice´ restaurant a couple of times a year and had meaningful and interesting chats. I recently moved to one of George´s favourite small towns, Stratford, and it was rather special to have George visit Louise and I at our new place one afternoon in August 2022. He was in town to take in about three productions over two days. It was so good to see him in person again after the Covid interruption. Little did I know at the time that it was to be the final get together. Adios, GG.

George was a marvel and I'm so sorry I haven't seen him for a while, unfortunately due to covid and distance. He was a great colleague. You could always rely on George to cheer you up and be helpful. I am truly thankful for having met him. You're the tops George. Love you

I knew George from working at the Toronto Reference Library. I found him to be a very kind colleague with a wonderful dry sense of humor. He will be missed by those who knew him as well. My condolences to his family and dear friends.
