Gerald Cleary Obituary

GERALD WILLIAM CLEARY After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Gerry was taken by the angels last Friday evening, May 27, 2011. Adored father of Patricia Anne and beloved grandfather to Jesse and Sabrina Clark. He is also survived by his golden retriever Dusty, a gift from his late wife Patricia (Peggy) Cleary. Gerry was a classic gentleman who was loved and respected by his family, friends and peers. Born May 2, 1930 in Montreal, he moved to Toronto with his darling Peggy in 1952. He soon founded G.W. Cleary Insurance Adjusters. Gerry was past president of the Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kingsway Council, convening the hockey league and working with the elderly until farming, his leisure focus, turned into a passion. All those who knew him understood his every weekend was spent at the farm, if not travelling the world, his other passion. Please help us celebrate a life well lived. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy. 10, N. of QEW), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church, 921 Flagship Dr., Mississauga, on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Trillium Health Centre Foundation, in recognition of their exceptional care.

My deepest sympathies on your loss. I too knew Gerry as Mr. Cleary and first met him about 1980; he was my boss's friend and business associate. My memories are of being treated with respect and kindness as a young woman starting out in the insurance business. I thank him for training and mentoring some of the industry's finest adjusters that I am still priveleged to do business with.

I received a call about Mr. Cleary passing away and started remembering a lot of things which happened while I was working for him. He was a great employer and I was well compensated for my work. I was a secretary in his company from 1978 until he sold it. I have fond memories of working for G.W. Cleary.

May He Rest in Peace

I received the call yesterday about Gerry's passing. It took me on a very long journey of memories.
I knew Gerry as Mr. Cleary - a friend of my dad's, and saw him on social occasions, trips to his farm, and worked cutting his grass (he paid more than the normal rate).
in 1974 we had a combination of mail strike and teachers strike - this was before courrier/fax/email - thus written communication was at a standstill. My dad put me to work delivering his mail, and Mr. Cleary got wind of it - he called my dad and hired me (paying more than the going rate I had with my dad). Years later I became an insurance adjuster - Mr. Cleary interviewed me and offered me a job (paying me more than I was making and more than I asked for - much more than the going rate). I learned a great deal from Mr. Cleary while working with him - he was a wonderful mentor, model, and teacher professionally as an insurance adjuster, as a businessman, and on a personal level.
It took me years before I could call him Gerry instead of Mr. Cleary - he finally had to sit me down and talk to me about calling him Gerry - I think I had worked for him for 5-6 years at the time.
I enjoyed several wonderful trips with Gerry and Peggy, including to Jamaica and Myrtle Beach. I was lucky to visit him at the farm many times - amazed at how relaxed he was there. I always enjoyed our "if its Monday it must be Mama's" lunches at Mama Martino's.
One memory stands out and demonstrates the kind of person Gerry was. We were on an all day drive from Toronto to Myrtle Beach for a golf getaway. We stopped at a rest station on the interstate. As we were leaving Gerry stopped the attendant and told him what a great job he was doing. As we walked back to the car he said to me "that poor bugger, working his tail off, probably for minimum wage, and I bet no one has ever told him what a great job he is doing" I thought, not only has no one told him, no one has probably ever noticed. That was Gerry, he noticed when you were doing a good job and complimented you on it (paying more than the normal rate).
Rest in peace!

David
