Student of good olde Cham from '84-'89 and do remember Joe as being an energetic powerhouse of economics (had his class on the 1st floor north-east-most side of school). Almost sat through a full run on the movie 'Wall Street' until he found out it had some, aheemn, compromising scenes. :)

Deepest sympathizes to the family on your loss. He certainly did make his mark on MANY a student!

My thoughts and prayers go to the family of Joe Palumbo.
Joe was a good friend and a passionate person when he took on an issue.
He was an active member of the Toronto Secondary Unit (OECTA).
It was always a pleasure working with him. I will miss him and his hardy laughter.
I was looking forward to sailing with Joe and his new sail boat in this world.
But, it appears that God needed him in heaven, he too needed a buddy to sail with.
“Till the next time we see each other Joe!” In the meantime I will miss your company here on earth.
Please say hello to my mom Ida in heaven.
You friend from near and far,
Frank Bruno

Often imitated never duplicated Mr. Joey Palumbo was a good man. His passion for teaching, baseball & the Leafs were all ways evident. Christie Street was the center of the universe, and he was not shy to let you know it. Seeing him @ pub nite back in November 20 years later was great reconnecting with him. He was excited about slowly reaching his retirement. Your right Mr. P life is too short, you got to enjoy while your still here. May you be in peace with God. Mary-Ann, my heart felt condolences to you and your family. What a tragedy to lose someone so suddenly, so young and full of life. I've often heard you talk about your brother with such admiration and love. From reading all the entries, I can feel how he touched so many lives.

While looking at the photos, I noticed that you carry Joe's infectious smile.

Keep all those memories vivid and alive in your heart and soul.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to be there for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

RIP Joe.

Dear Palumbo family,

I'm not sure if you'll remember me but I looked after Joe for 5 nights in the MSICU. I don't remember every family long term but something about you all stuck with me. I smiled at your stories of Joe and the way I could tell how much you loved him. I was there the night he got even sicker. My heart sank when we had to break the news.

I really wanted to be there this morning for the funeral. I was even planning on coming after night shift. But then my patient last night was quite sick and they need me back tonight. Please know you were in my thoughts today... and my thoughts & prayers will be with your family going forward. I know you'll miss Joe. From what you told me about him, I believe the world will be missing a good man as well!

I am truly devastated by the loss of Mr. Palumbo. Any possible class I could have taken of his, I did. Grade 11 and 12 Economics by far being the two classes that made the most impact on my life; we became really close and he truly inspired me to start thinking in an economical way. He inspired me to take the direction I did in life and I appreciate everything he did for me. He was so dedicated to his students and Chaminade. A true legend that will never be forgotten.
Sir, may your soul rest in peace and may God bless your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was so saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Palumbo. He was my Economics teacher in OAC. From that one year, it was obvious he was a great teacher and all around nice guy. His passion and work ethic were unmatched. His sense of humor memorable. He was real and the type of person you could never forget. Years later, when I regualrly returned to the school as an occasional teacher, Joe always made an effort to catch up with me - it was always nice talking to him. It is such a shame that won't happen anymore. I can just see him with a full bag hanging over his shoulder, hands full of papers, charging up the stairs.
Your loss will be felt and you will be dearly missed, Mr. Palumbo. Your spirit and memories will live on, though, with your family, friends, colleagues and students. You did good. God bless and happy sails...

Earth has lost a wonderful man. A bright new star has been added to heaven. I grew up with Joey. Christie Pitts, St Albans boys club, Essex, and Commerce. Joey was always a ray of light on a cloudy day. Having heard of your passing made me stop and reflect on how you will be sadly missed by all of the people you touched. You were one that everyone felt good around and we respected you.

Dear, sweet, lovable Joe. You couldn't wait to get to school each morning, dragging volumes of books and papers along Queens Drive in frigid wintery weather. You never reported for your job, but embraced a vocation that made a difference in the lives of so many who owe their success in life to you. Dear, sweet, compassionate Joe. How selflessly you took students and colleagues alike under your wings, accompanied them through life's journeys, celebrated their victories and mourned their losses.
Dear, sweet, charismatic Joe. It was often that your unique mannerisms, noteworthy expressions and infectious laughter were lovingly mimicked, and you left a piece of yourself to those who looked up to you.
Life, lived to the fullest, love given unconditionally, always stretching farther to reach that star of social justice, this was your heaven on earth...and we are indeed grateful to have been part of your heaven if even for a brief moment.
Lord, we ask not why you have so suddenly taken him away. We thank you instead, for having given Joe to us.
Forever together on heaven and on earth.
My sincerest condolences to the Palumbo family.

RIP Joe Palumbo
This blogwriter is very saddened to learn from OECTA Metro 7 [M7] that co-founding member + union activist Joe Palumbo died in a coma on Saturday March 16th, 2013. Joe was actively involved with the pro -democracy group's Ontario Labour Relations Board MOU complaint. Joe was also a staff representative at Chaminade Catholic Secondary School here in Toronto . Moreover, he has had a long record of service on various union committees.

We commemorate Joe's passing remembering the strong independent stand he + his group had to take at the time, both locally and at the provincial level. They stood up immediately + publicly for all OECTA members who were unequivocally opposed to the MOU. Joe took his stand in a timely manner without reservation for his uncompromising union beliefs. One hopes our brothers + sisters in OSSTF and ETFO understand and appreciate Joe's work with the M7 to oppose the MOU and will also share in our grief, thoughts or prayers for Joe and his family.
Special thanks to M7 for sharing this sad information with us. Joe was a union fighter. He was a part of the essential and often thankless OECTA underground fight against the MOU. Joe deserves praise and recognition for his contribution.
Thank you Joe for standing up forcefully for our union members' democratic rights! May God bless you and keep you. You will live on in our hearts and minds.

Joe, my coworker and dear friend; a man I could always rely on for great advice, constant support, and endless laughter. Joe, your absence has left heaviness in my heart that grows each time I think of the many conversations we had or walk into the classroom we shared. Your hearty laugh, devotion to your students, passion for just about everything in life, and your incredible attention to detail will always remain in my memory. From the moment I walked into Chaminade as a new teacher, you guided me and promised that everything would work out for me with the job situation, and as always, you held up your promise. Without you, I would not be where I am today. I am so grateful for everything you have done for me over the past few years, for our many conversations - that ranged from school to sailing to Italian singers and rock bands - and most importantly, for having met you. I hope you are sailing somewhere peacefully along the shores in Heaven. We miss you dearly.

My deepest condolences to the Palumbo family.

Rest in peace Joe!

Dear Mary-Ann and the Palumbo family, We are very sorry for your loss. I went to school with Mary-Ann but I knew Joey through my sister Blythe. Joey was a life long friend to my sister and in reading these amazing tributes, he was clearly a friend to so many others as well. My sister spoke of him often as he supported her through so many life events...birth of children, loss of parents...he came to visit our mom when she was ill and then he came to see my dad when he was in the hospital before he passed. He made them laugh and he knew how to be a friend and a support in a way no one else could. He was a kind and thoughtful friend. Our deepest sympathies to all of you from Mia Tsuji and my Family; Mike, Aiden and Faith

After I left, we still kept in touch from time to time. I'd see him at concerts and at get togethers and we'd have so much fun.

Joe Palumbo (Chaminade Staff Rep – Sad News)
It is always sad to pass on news of a member who has passed away. This weekend one of our active staff representatives Joe Palumbo passed away. Joe succumbed to a sudden serious infection after a short time in the hospital. We have been in touch with the Chaminade administration and thank them for their support. We have also been in touch with the family and ask that you include Joes family and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers. Joe was always a passionate man with a hearty laugh who was active on committees in TSU serving colleagues. We are thankful for everything he has added to TSU and for all he added for all his colleagues; whether they knew him personally or not, many benefited from Joe's work through TSU.

On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence have devolved on us the task of a double living, that we have henceforth to fulfill the promise of our friend's life also, in our own, to the world.

I first met Joey in Grade 8 at Essex. Throughout high school I had a huge crush on him. What girl didn't have a crush on Joey? He was so sweet, so cute. Always had a smile on his face. We did hang out together a few times after high school ended and shared some great laughs. On occasion, over the years I'd run into Joey. The last time was 2 summers ago in Bloor West Village. We had a drink together and then went our separate ways. I am so happy I was able to spend that hour with him that day and will cherish that memory. Joey was a fun loving, upbeat, caring and sincere human being who always had a smile. I know he loved kids and had an incredible passion being a teacher to his students. I am so terribly saddened by his loss. Taken much too soon. He will always have a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are also with his family.

We were so saddened to read about Joe's passing. It has been years since we have seen your family. My husband and I both went to Essex. Susan, you and I were in the same class at Essex and were friends. I remember Joe as "Joey" back in those days. The condolences written here for Joe are a true testament to the positive impact he had on his students. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Sincerely, Nick and Donna Magaletta (nee McCormick)

I remember the first year I played organized baseball with the Lizzies, Joey was on the team. In my first game, a ball was hit to me in the outfield and I caught it, but I froze and didn't know where to throw it. Joey was playing shortstop that game and he was yelling at me so I just finally threw it to him. He was upset that I had kind of screwed up the play, like a veteran would be upset with a rookie. Anyway, when we came to the dugout, he came up to me and sort of apoligized ( as best as 14 year olds could) and I felt a lot better about my play. We went on to win the city championship that season, but that encounter with Joey is always my most memorable moment of that season. I would go on years later and play with all three Palumbo brothers, always a lot of fun to be had.
Rest in Peace Joey, hit a few out the park for us!

With deepest sympathy, I send my regards to Mr. Palumbo's Family.

I remember how he liked his job on the Canadian National railway as a porter. He shared some interesting stories with me while sitting on the porch at his home.

I know he will be missed by many.

Long time family friend.

I'm still in shock after seeing Joey's obituary in the paper today. I know Joey from our days at Central Commerce and York and still have such fond memories of him. He was quite a character back then, but always had a big heart. RIP my dear friend.

The coolest guy in school is how I remember him. I was a former student of his and I never had a better time being in class than when I had Mr.Palumbo first thing in the morning. He brought a smile to your face without even trying. He had charisma and a great energy for life. He will be missed dearly. I wish I could have seen him one last time.

I had Joe as an Economics teacher and a baseball coach during my time at Chaminade. Joe or "Rocky" was one of a kind. His passion for baseball was evident as was his passion for teaching. I remember having great conversations with Joe on how to throw the perfect curveball and getting thrown off the Christie Pits diamond by the Inter County Leafs after Joe and a few of my teamates jumped the fence to practice at the Pits one day. Joe told us it would'nt be a problem LOL. Rest in Peace Joe : )

My teacher, friend, colleague, and mentor. I can never thank you enough for your inspiration, passion, and dedication in the classroom and out. You're one of the many reasons why I became an educator. I will cherish all the memories that we shared together both at Chaminade and especially the last time I saw you. I could have not picked a better place than the Molsen Amphitheatre watching The Black Keys with you and seeing you fight through the crowd to reach the stage.
At the end of the night as you struggled to unlock your bike chain because you had to buy a used one, you told me that one day you were going to just sail away from everything. Bon voyage Joe. You will truly be missed.

Although Joey was my 1st cousin, we didn't see eachother that much, but when we did, we shared the comfort, closeness and warmth of a close-knit family (as the 5 Sanelli clan did when we got together with our awesome 5 Palumbo cousins)! Your legacy really lives on in the lives of your students, who you have clearly touched so deeply. When I came to Cham to track you down, as soon as I mentioned Joey Palumbo.... a huge smile came upon your colleauges faces & they threw you the accolades! I will always remember you with a big smile and a bigger heart! Our hearfelt prayers go out to your brothers, sisters, their families and especially to Zia Tita. We will miss you and love you Joey.
