Gladys O'Connor Obituary

GLADYS O'CONNOR 1903 - 2012 On Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the remarkable age of 108, Gladys died without pain at the O'Neill Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born in East London, England, Gladys and her family sailed to Canada in 1912 on the next boat after the Titanic. At 14 she started work as a saleswoman, shipper and book-keeper with Empire Wallpapers. When she retired, she began her second career as an actress in films, television and commercials and was made an honourary member of ACTRA, the actor's union. Predeceased by her siblings Nora and Dennis, her "kid sister" Sheila, and her nephews Bob, Jack and Allan, Gladys's enthusiasm and generous nature will be missed by so many of us - Loretta and Chris, Debbie, Shirley and Pat, Rob and Carrie, Mary and Jim, the Goddard, Stasiuk, Booth and Preston families, Donna and Harold, Anne and Julia, Paul and Nancy. Gladys' ashes will be interred in Pine Hills Cemetery with arrangements through The Simple Alternative. And in the spring, a celebration of her life will be held.

Rest in peace dear Gladys. I too have very fond memories of times spent with you. I recall many stories from Phyllis Thorpe, my late mother-in-law, about good times spent at Empire Wallpaper and the long friendship from childhood that she and Gladys shared. Gladys was the only one who could call Phyllis' sons, Jackie and Billie, well into adulthood. You were very special to them. Goodbye dear Gladys. Please advise me of the details regarding the memorial. Marilyn Thorpe ... [email protected]

With very fond memories of Gladys who was one of the first friends we made when we arrived in Canada in 1970. We stayed in contact with her for many years afterwards and I recall her visiting us after we moved from our first apartment. She was a great neighbour and a wonderful friend to our family - we will always remember her. Please advise me of the details regarding the memorial.

I remember Gladys well all during my life. She was a warm and caring person with wonderful spirit. My mother, Rena Ringland, was a very old friend of Gladys, they met as girls during their early lives somewhere in downtown Toronto. Gladys and Mother had a lasting friendship and later in the 50's Gladys arranged for Mother to also work at Empire in the store on Yonge Street. Gladys came to know my family and Mother her's.
What a remarkable and inspiring life Gladys lead. Please advise me of the memorial date. Jean Hunt - [email protected]
