GREGORY JUMP Obituary

GREGORY V. JUMP Greg Jump passed away on the afternoon of November 5, 2015 in a Toronto General Hospital room overcrowded with members of his loving family. He was ten days shy of his 74th birthday. His one-sided and punishing battle with lung cancer and COPD began five years ago - just prior to his scheduled retirement from University of Toronto, where he had contentedly taught economics for four decades. Gregory Vern Jump was born on November 15, 1941, in Willard, Ohio, a second child for Richard Miller Jump and Cleo Elaine Hessler (both American). He earned his B.A. at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio and followed with a Ph.D. from University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. After teaching for one year at the Wharton School of Economics he settled in Toronto and joined the faculty at University of Toronto. Greg was a serious man equipped with a mischievous sense of humour. His passions and interests were numerous and varied: he was a knowledgeable gardener, an avid reader (especially of history), an amateur patissier and a keen fisherman. He also enjoyed American candy and dry vodka martinis. But nothing gave him so much pleasure as the company of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Sondra Sullivan, his daughters and step-daughter, Christine Creighton, Nicole Smith and Lisa Richler, their husbands Peter Creighton, Robert Smith and Jacob Richler and grandchildren Simon, Max, Charlie and Nicholas. He is also survived by his siblings, Susan Tissue (and her husband David), Jack Jump (and his wife Yvonne) and Vicki Landis (and her husband Terry). All will miss him badly. In parting, we all wish to express gratitude for the efforts of the many doctors, nurses and other caregivers who did so much to help. A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 10th, from noon - 1 p.m, at the Toronto Necropolis Chapel in Cabbagetown. A service will follow at 1 p.m. A small reception for family and close friends will follow at 416 Sackville St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Lung Association.

The most memorable time I think of Gregg was sharing it with him and other family members at Wallace's 50th birthday party. I was saddened to learn of his passing.
