Helen Bentley Obituary

HELEN BENTLEY (nee STANUTZ) Mom passed away peacefully in the arms and company of her family on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at age 84 at Southlake Regional Care Centre in Newmarket, moving on to join her beloved husband George (Chirp) and cherished daughter Diane. She was also predeceased by her parents Phyllis and Nicolas Stanutz; sisters, Mary, Anne and Irene; and brothers John, Dan and George. Mom is survived by daughter Cheryle and her husband John Went of King City, son George Jr. and his wife Pat of Nepean, granddaughters Elizabeth and Sarah Went, sisters Ruby Shanks, Vera Atkin, Eva Corey (George), brothers-in-law Harry Bentley (Marg) and Gord Bentley, and numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Mom was born November 4, 1924, just outside Dahinda, in southern Saskatchewan. She spent her formative years on the family farm before moving to Timmins. Mom travelled to Simcoe in the early 1940s, where she met the young man nicknamed Chirp who became the love of her life. They were married in 1942, just before Dad went off to war. Mom gave birth to Diane the next year. Cheryle joined the family in 1948 and George Jr. in 1956. Mom was always active volunteering in the community, and later working for the Ontario Conservatory of Music and in a seniors care facility. She had a passion for travel, and loved gardening, antiques, and theatre. She passed these loves onto her family members, who were her focus, first and foremost. She was a battler, never understanding the word can't. But this time, she was tired. Her work here was done. We mourn but celebrate the life of our Mother, a woman full of style, passion, feistiness, and above all, love. Our family would like to extend thanks to the staff of 2W at Southlake Village for the compassion and comfort they provided to our Mother under sometimes trying conditions. Mom is now at rest, finally at home with Dad and Diane. We miss her and always will. Please join us as we celebrate Mom's life on Saturday, May 9, visitation - 12 noon to 2 p.m. and service at 2 p.m. Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive, in Newmarket, ON, 905-898-2100. Interment, Monday, May 11, Simcoe, ON.

The photo of Auntie Helen is just like I picture her... such a kind, caring person with a sweet voice. My brother Brian is right... it seems like just yesterday that we were children scurrying around her yard, wreaking havoc!

Soon we will all be together again in the sweet bye and bye the Lord promises us, and this too will happen before we know it. What a promise we have in God ! So, bye for now Auntie Helen, see ya soon,

Laurie

I am related to Auntie Helen through marriage to her nephew Brian. Many years ago Auntie Helen helped me through a very difficult time in my life. She shared experiences with me from a time in her own life that brought her despair and anxiety. There was such comfort in her words. I don't believe she ever knew how much the conversations that I had with her meant to me. I used her as an example in many ways during that time. Thank you and rest sweetly Auntie Helen.

Aunt Helen was truly a remarkable person. Some of my fondest childhood memories were visiting her and Uncle Chirp in Simcoe. Later when I was older and the last one at home, often Helen and Chirp would come and visit my parents for the weekend. Many nights Mom, Aunt Helen and I would sit at the kitchen table and talk. We’d talk about the goings on in the world and about family. I look back at those times and smile. So sad she’s gone but the memories will always remain. She will remain forever in my heart.

Grandma Stanutz lived to a couple months short of her 96th birthday, and we all foolishly thought we would inherit those genes. Unfortunately, God had other plans and long before their time, Helen has joined her sisters Irene, Anne, Mary and brothers John, Dan and George. Thirteen years ago when she was struck down with an aneurysm and a subsequent stroke, the Helen we all knew, admired and cherished was no longer the same person. Her zest for life and vivacious was suddenly gone, but the awesome memories we have of times gone by will live on forever. She was a remarkable hostess and always made our family feel so welcome. Her house abounded with the sweet smells of her delicious food and was surrounded by the beautiful gardens which were a real labor of her love. She loved fine things, and her true flair and style were a real testimonial of the beautiful person she was. She was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter and sister. Our only consolation is that she is now with her beloved Chirp, her mother and father and brothers and sisters. She truly loved both her immediate and extended family. We will miss her, but also know that she is a better place in the hands of God. She will always be my dear and beloved sister. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the entire Bentley family.

Auntie Helen...that's how I'll always remember her. My family spent many vacations walking the long pier on what we use to call Turkey Point in Simcoe, Ont. She always was so beautiful, both inside and out...even when Randy, my brother, and I were driving her crazy. Uncle Chirp always defended us. It seems like yesterday...

I'll miss you Auntie Helen...your nephew

My Aunt Helen was 'something', aptly named for the Greek goddess and inspiring for her energy and attitude. I am so glad she was my aunt, she lives on in my heart.

Helen was a most amazing woman. She was my Aunt, my Godmother and a true friend. She was never judgemental and always supportive. I will always remember her as one of the most giving people. Her memory will be cherished by many of the lifes she touched. I know this time of sorrow is hard for the family but Helen is now with Diane and Chirp. They will be embracing her in love. Just like she embraced all of us with her's. I will always cherish my time I had with her. And she will never be forgotten .She will live in our hearts forever. All my love Karen Bentley
