Helen DUNCAN Obituary

DUNCAN, Helen (nee BIENOSZ) September 10, 1933- February 1, 2022 Helen Duncan (nee Bienosz) was born to Polish and Ukrainian parents in Toronto. Helen was predeceased by Errol, her husband of 57 years. She leaves behind her beloved sister and best friend Jeannette; daughter Kirsty; son Christopher (Cynthia) and grandchildren Isabella and Lily; and lifelong friends May, Kay, Jean, Jenny, Vera, as well as numerous cherished friends. Helen excelled in school, worked from age 13, and became the first person in her family to graduate university in 1954 when she completed a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education. As a high school teacher for over 30 years, she loved both her vocation and her students. Helen was insatiably curious about the world and had a thousand interests. She fell in love with bagpipes at the age of five, later learned to play, and was a proud member of the Toronto Girls Pipe Band. She earned her pilot's license when few women flew and before she learned to drive. At age 60 she took up sailing and then racing, and could not wait for Friday night suppers and dances at the Mooredale Sailing Club. She returned to university in her seventies to study new languages and loved nothing better than a good grammar debate. Helen taught all the neighborhood children to swim in the family pool and was happiest when the backyard was full of people. Her nights and weekends were filled with supporting her children in their activities, which included being a member of dancing and sport executives. Helen took every opportunity to visit both the lake and Toronto Island: her wanderlust took her family on numerous vacations in search of the perfect beach. Mom, you were our everything, our hearts are breaking, and we trust the pipes are playing you home to Dad. As an expression of sympathy, a donation may be made to the SickKids Foundation.

As one of the Mooredale sailing gang she was loved by all. She was such fun and always helping out. Although she never made it to the top of the heap sailing - on the dance floor she excelled! I cannot say enough about her generosity, attention to detail and kindness. My sincere sypathy at the loss of your Mom, Kirsty and Christopher, she was one of the best. And she was so proud of you both.

Helen was my Phys. Ed. Teacher at Harbord Collegiate. I remember her endless energy and focus as she ran about in her skort, the fashion in the 60´s, making sure we were all involved in the class activities. My fondest memory was hearing her practice the bagpipes each lunch hour. She would parade up and down the gym playing her heart out. A wonderful, dedicated teacher. My thoughts are with her family.

I have many fond memories of spending entire weekends splashing around in the pool with Kirsty, Christopher, and the gang. Helen, always so vibrant and full of fun, never hesitated to host of house full of friends and family members and run back and forth from the house to the pool making sure that everyone was fed and happy. She filled the air with her singing and humming and she always shared her passion for teaching and learning with those around her. Helen was a kind, caring person to everyone and an incredible life-long, true friend to my mother, Jeanne. I will miss her thoughtful inquiries, her genuine interest in my life and the care and concern that she always expressed for the well being of me and my family. Helen was a beautiful person with a quick wit and a raucous laugh that filled the air with joy. I love you loads, Auntie Helen, "Musketeer". May we all continue to enjoy the bagpipes, Highland dancing and sunny days by the pool in your honour.

Kirsty and Christopher, my heart breaks for you and your family. Your mother was such a lovely person and she will definitely be missed. I am here for you just as you and your family have always been here for us! Sending our love your way. Bonnie
