HERMAN STAR Obituary

STAR, HERMAN October 30, 1931 - November 18, 2018 Forever handsome, charming and gentlemanly, Herman Star passed away peacefully on November 18, 2018, at the age of 87, with his daughter and her children by his side. A towering, strong man with a powerful voice and giant heart. Herman was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret (2016). He will be forever missed. Dearest father of son Tom (Deidre), their children (the late Akasha) and Thomas; son Bruce (Vincy), their children Brandon (Stefanie) Michael, Helga and Alexander; and his daughter Margaret (late Michael), children Warren, Mathew and Catherine Ruth. He is survived by his brother Bill and predeceased by his sister Miriam. Herman always worked hard, knew the value of a dollar and made sure his kids and grandkids knew it too. He was born in Montreal, grew up in Toronto where he started his automotive career as a mechanic. He then opened his own gas and repair station which he ran for many years before spending his last working years teaching automotive at General Wolfe Secondary School. Tearing phone books was "for fun" (he tore up every phone book he got until Bell stopped delivering to him). When he wasn't working, he could be found sailing around Lake Ontario from the Port Credit Yacht Club with his late beloved wife Margaret as his trusted navigator. He traded his sailboat in for a tractor when he moved to the countryside. In January 2016, after a cardiac incident, Herman was the first patient to land on the helipad at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Sincerest thanks to Dr. McConachie, his staff, all the ICU Doctors, nurses, specialists and everyone who gave us 34 more months. And a special thank you to Kate who cared for Dad and Mom before him. You provided exceptional PSW care and so much more. Special thanks to all of Kate's team. Time is precious and we never have enough of it. So thank you, Dad, for recovering against the odds and giving us more time with you. May we always be inspired by your incredible strength, values, humanity and kind heart. A Memorial Reception will be held at The Oakville Club, 56 Water Street, Oakville, on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 2 p.m. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Turner & Porter Neweduk - Erin Mills Chapel, 905-828-8000. Donations are appreciated, in lieu of flowers, to the Oakville Hospital Foundation. http://oakvillehospitalfoundation.com

Herman was a giant. He came from humble beginnings but hard work, honesty and integrity put him at the top of his field. He was a successful businessman who gave it up to become a teacher. And he was a brilliant teacher. He shared his outstanding qualities with his students who admired him. I have been a friend of Herman for over 35 years and learned a lot from him. I carry him with me every day of my life.

My deepest condolences to Herman's entire family, especially my good childhood friend Bruce. I still fondly remember cutting the grass at Herman's home in Orchard Heights for a few summers in the early 1970s.

I add my condolences to Herman's family. I grew up on Applewood Rd in '60's, and worked for Herman before I could drive. He taught me alot, about customer service and hustling to do your job. He had high standards, and I know I'm a better person due to his firm leadership. (gas was 29c a gallon then!!)

I have fond memories of taking my Dad's car over to Herman's Gulf Station and receiving the royal treatment. When you were talking to Herman, you knew you were talking to someone who was genuinely interested. My prayers are with the family now.
