HUBERT PATRICK McLOUGHLIN HIGGINS MD FRCPC FACP HUSBAND, FATHER, BROTHER, PHYSICIAN, TEACHER Physician-in-Chief, St. Michael's Hospital 1979-1989 Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto Surrounded by his loving family, died peacefully on September 6, 2009 after a long struggle with Parkinson's. Beloved husband of Julia Agnes (nee Higgins). Survived by his devoted brother, Father Brian Higgins, C.S.B. Cherished father of Maureen (Gordon Hill), Cathy (Simon Lewis), Peter (Ann Marie Canning), Julie (Douglas Harvey), Betsy (William P. Jones Jr.), Brian (Eileen O'Sullivan), Shelagh (Richard Kellam), Norah (Maris Burnham) and Kevin (Andrea Hunt). Proud grandfather of Brian (Claudia), Patrick (Erin), Kathleen (John), Eileen, Shelagh and Maureen Hill; Ben, Evan and Emma Lewis; Peter (Amy), Katie, Conner and Bridget Higgins; John, Madeleine, Olivia and James Harvey; William, Julia, Catherine and Elizabeth Jones; Julia, James, Clare and Liam Higgins; Darragh, Pierce, Kieran and Brendan Kellam; Nuala and Seamus Burnham; Jack and Charlie Higgins. Devoted great-grandfather of Sophia and Maria Hill, Joshua Hill and Finn Higgins. Also survived by Dr. and Mrs. W.J. Farrell and many nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of St. Michael's College School, Class of 42. Served his country overseas with the Reconnaissance troops of the 21st Canadian Armoured Regiment, Governor General's Footguards. He celebrated his 21st birthday on May 4, 1945, the day of the surrender by German troops. Graduated Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Class of 1950; Helen Vandervere Fellow in Pathology at the Banting Institute 1953; Chief Resident at St. Michael's Hospital 1954; Samuel McLaughlin Research Fellow in London, England 1955. Dr. Higgins joined the Department of Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital in 1956; Physician-in-Chief, St. Joseph's Hospital 1976-1979; Physician-in-Chief, St. Michael's Hospital 1979-1989. He was Chairman of the Medical Committee for the 1984 Papal Visit. He continued his work as an endocrinologist at St. Michael's Hospital until his retirement in 1999. In honour of his outstanding commitment toward residency training in Medicine, the Annual Higgins Day Resident Research event was set up in 1989 by the Dept. of Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital to present exceptional research by internal medicine residents. Dr. Higgins was inducted into the Order of St. Michael, the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and the Knights of Malta. He was an avid reader, skier, sailor and longtime member of the RCYC. He will be fondly remembered for his abiding faith, his love of family, his respect and compassion for Toronto's most needy citizens and his dedication to St. Michael's Hospital, his home away from home for almost 50 years. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jerry Zownir, Dr. Peter Kopplin, Dr. Karen Chien and all the compassionate nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital. The family will receive friends at Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Ave., Toronto on Wednesday, September 9 between 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Basil's Church, 50 St. Joseph St., Toronto on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. Interment following at Mount Hope Cemetery.
