Ian DALTON Obituary

DALTON, Ian Robert - Passed away peacefully at the Bridgepoint Palliative Care Unit on August 21, 2014 at the age of 85. He had lived in Toronto his entire life. Predeceased by his brother, Gordon (Kay) and his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" (Tom). He will be sadly missed by dear friends and family. Survived by his nephews, Bruce (Christine), Neil (Anne Marie), Graham, his niece, Nancy (Gord) and great-nieces and nephews, Helen and Mitchell, Rachel and Emily, Sisto, Kelly and Ryan. Ian attended University of Toronto Schools starting in grade 7 and graduated from the University of Toronto in Electrical Engineering with high Honours in 1950. He explored areas of biomedical engineering and set up an Experimental Teaching Unit for the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at U of T. Professional activities included the design of an elaborate bronze sundial that commemorates the Toronto Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory. He retired as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering at U of T in 1994. Ian enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies including target shooting, horseback riding, art classes, genealogy and cabinet making. Music was a constant in his life. He played a variety of musical instruments including the piano, clarinet, viola and harpsichord, but the "love of his life" was the flute. He also studied Latin, French, German, Italian and Dutch. An active and healthy man, with a multitude of interests, Ian was still handling all of the domestic chores, as well as mowing the lawn at the family farm until 2012. Over the last 2 years, Ian battled with cancer, continually surprising all with his fortitude. Special thanks to Dr. Kozak and his staff. Visitation to be held at Turner & Porter, Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Kipling and Islington Aves.), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bridgepoint Foundation.

Ian was an interesting and methodical guy. I lived across the street from Ian for several years. When Ian was in his late seventies, I would often go and help him shovel snow which had to be done exactly his way. Ian was an amazing repairman. He fixed an old clothing steam press of his mother's, repaired and finished an old round wooden mirror that had been in his family for years and remodelled the little bathroom off the kitchen. I knew Ian as a bird and a dog lover. He loved Betty's Golden Retrievers and I would bring mine over for him to pet. I enjoyed having tea with Ian and chatting. Ian was a gentleman. I will miss him.

I remember Ian's dry sense of humour, especially during the 3 pm coffee breaks in the EE/Civil Galbraith common room. I also remember the stories about the Departmental picnic at the Dalton farm, but alas I joined the Department too late.
