IAN THORNTON Obituary

Ian Bruce Thornton, 59, passed on October 27, 2019, after losing efforts to treat his failing heart. Beloved son of Joan Lloyd and of the late Barry Thornton, brother of Paul (Deirdre), Marni, and step-family to Tricia and Amy Thornton (Jo), the Lloyd and Jamieson families, and cousin of the Miles family, in Winnipeg. Ian was smart, artistic, loved animals, music, and was an ardent David Bowie fan. As a boy, he sold his drawings door to door, and tried to home lots of stray wildlife. Ian achieved a radio and TV diploma from Niagara College and worked on-air in Simcoe, until replaced by technology. A temp courier job became permanent and he made many friends at work. Celebration of life TBA. Donations welcome at Heart & Stroke Foundation Canada or OVC Pet Trust.

I knew Ian in College. We spent many nights together listening to his extensive music collection and being young. What stayed with me is his love for music, art and animals. Ian was passionate and he will be missed. His memory stays with me to this day as one of the few friends I had during college.

Kindred spirit.

When doing a scrub of some dollar bins at a local record store I found a fairly common record (Little Feat, Time Loves a Hero). There was nothing uncommon about finding the album, it was pressed a million times in the 70's and since. What was outstanding was the condition. It was if the vinyl had never seen a stylus. I noticed when I went to open it that "Ian Thornton" was written on the inside edge of the opening. I always find it odd when someone writes their name on a record cover. I assume it means that they were generous with their music and shared it with others and this was their way to ensure that it found its way home. The inside of the sleeve was a curious place. It meant that the owner didn't want to mar the cover. Opening the record also led to the discovery of a brand on the paper liner as well.
In my continued search through bins I continued to find incredible music all in the same pristine and archival state. All from the same collection. I thought I would try and find the source of this collection. Its lead me here. I love music and everything it brings to my life. When my time comes I hope that everything that I find precious in these round black discs lives on. I hope it finds a new life, like a story teller that won't be silenced. I'll take care of these until its time for their next caregiver. I never knew Ian, and I'm not even sure these were his but if they were I thought someone should know someone was wondering about him today.
