IRVING UNGERMAN Obituary

IRVING UNGERMAN February 1, 1923 - October 27, 2015 It is with profound sadness that Irving's family announces his passing on October 27, 2015 while surrounded by Sylvia, his loving wife of 70 years, and his children, Shelley and Sydney Sukerman, Howie Ungerman and Cindy Kirsch, and Temmi Ungerman Sears and David Sears. He will be deeply missed by each of them, his grandchildren, Darren and Jacqueline, Lauren and Thomas, Jordan, Jaclyn, Jeremy, Dylan and Ilana and his great-grandchildren, Avner, Eytan, Ronen and Micah. Dear brother of the late Harry, Jack, Dave, Kievy, Betty and Ida. Funeral to be held at Beth Sholom Synagogue, 1445 Eglinton Avenue West at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30th. Interment at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park. Shiva will be held at 2600 Bathurst Street. Memorial donations may be made to the Irving Ungerman Memorial Fund c/o The Benjamin Foundation 416-780-0324 or at www.benjamins.ca Irving lived a long and active life and touched the hearts of so many through his uparalleled generosity, business and real estate endeavours, charitable contributions and involvement in the sports world. Irving was honoured countless times with awards and accolades far too many to list but among the most appreciated were the Order of Ontario, the Diamond Jubilee Award, the Beth Sholom Brotherhood Humanitarian Award and his appointment to the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame. Irving was known as the "Chicken King" in the City of Toronto while operating Royce Dupont Poultry for sixty years. He also helped bring sports and boxing to the forefront in Toronto and across Canada by managing a number of boxers and promoting a number of international title fights, and by being the first to introduce closed circuit television to the country. He was one of the original directors of the Toronto Santa Claus Parade who saved the Parade from becoming an historical footnote and served on its Board for 34 years. He was a strong promoter of Gravenhurst where he spent all of his spare time at the family compound that he built on Pine Lake. More than anything else he enjoyed life at the cottage with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Irving encountered many medical problems over the past decade but none slowed him down or kept him from living life to its fullest. To all of his many doctors who helped keep him going, despite his health issues, his family extends their heartfelt thanks for the extra years they gave us with him. Irving has left us in body but his spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him. Truly one of a kind.

I will never forget when this man was showing me around at age 91. He was driving the boat and after docking it, moved quickly up the side if a rocky island telling me to keep up. I also won't forget how he told me I should be fighter or a basketball player - Clearly at a sense of humour. My thoughts are with his family.

I had the true pleasure to both know and assist Irving in business matters that arose after he sold Royce Dupont to the then Maple Leaf Mills Corporation. He was determined in achieving the outcome he sought and through his determination it happened. I learned from him and truly enjoyed Irving "the man" and his profound generosity.
My personal sympathies go out to all in his family.
He no doubt will be missed, but I am confident he provided you all many vivid, lasting and happy moments and memories.
May he Rest In Peace.

I had the honour and pleasure of meeting Irving (and Sylvia) a few years ago. My husband, Bernie and I also helped celebtate his 90th Birthday. Irving was truly a maverick in business. His stories were memorable. It was his generosity and kindness though, which I shall always remember. He will be missed by so many, but live on forever in the hearts of all he met. Blessed be his name.
