Jack BERRYMAN Obituary

BERRYMAN, Jack Harry September 19, 1936 - April 19, 2023 Surrounded by love, Jack passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto in his 87th year, after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Beloved and devoted husband to his sweetheart and late wife of 62 years, Ellen Doreen Berryman (nee Sanderson). Adored and loving father of Elizabeth (Paul), Dianne (Murray), Paul (Kelly), Mark (Dawn) and Denise (Michael). Proud Grandpa to Elise (Michael), Madeleine (Quintin), Sean, Liam, Olivia, Jameson, and Easton and doting Great-Grandpa to Wesley and Clementine. Jack was born and raised in the idyllic village of Elora, Ontario and was the son of parents, Elsie Jean Reeves and Harry Rudge Berryman. Jack was a lifelong educator, and although, he would say he never worked a day in his life, had a storied career with the Toronto District School Board, notably with tenures as Vice Principal and Principal at various schools, including Givens, Palmerston and Osler Public Schools, and as an Education Officer. In the 1980's, Jack took on a position in the Ontario Ministry of Education Legislative Branch and as a session professor at Brock University in their Education program. He received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Toronto in 1986. He was a proud Canadian and long-time icon and fixture of the Humber Valley Village community for over 50 years. He had a keen interest in history, family genealogy and sports (especially his Blue Jays or Canadians). He was a member of The Mayflower Society and was a United Empire Loyalist. Jack documented much of his life in verse and words and his collection of poetry, 'The Life and Times of an Elora Boy', resides at the Wellington Country Library. He was a man of faith and hope, being a lifetime Elder and legend at Humber Valley United Church. Jack was and always will be our family's beacon of light and strong leader. He was truly the definition of what a fine and gentle man is. We will forever strive to make him proud and he will be terribly missed. The family would like to thank his caregiver, Joriza Apuada, the P.S.W. team at C.B.I., Dr. Allen Zee, and Dr. John Blondal and his team at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Unending thanks to neighbours Bob and Anne Shiley for their support and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's name to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Jack's wonderful life will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., Etobicoke, ON. The family will receive well-wishers at the church in Arthur Steed Hall from 12:30-2:00 p.m., preceding the service. Cremation has already taken place and interment will take place at Belsyde Cemetery in Fergus at a later date. The service will be livestreamed, with the link to be provided on the Turner & Porter website, www.turnerporter.ca

Sad to hear of my friend's passing. I met Jack in Hong Kong when he was the inspector for our Ontario school, The Canadian Overseas Secondary School.
He impressed me with his classy dress and hat, contagious laugh and his attention to detail with our inspection. He became my mentor and we met for lunch and a beer in Toronto for many years. Lots of stories and laughs. Rest in peace my kind mentor and friend.

We met Jack and Doreen when we were renting a condo at Lagoon Lane in Florida and enjoyed their company every November for the four years that we visited there. They were the nicest people and we often spent time together at the pool and had many lovely conversations sitting and enjoying the sun. Since then we have been exchanging Christmas cards every year and last Christmas he wrote that he had not been well. We have talked about him often and wondered how he was doing and today doing this year's Christmas cards I found his obituary and was so very sorry to see that he had passed away. He was a lovely, gentle man and we enjoyed his company so much. He always called us his "Newfoundland friends".
Sending our deepest sympathy to all of Jack's family from his Newfoundland friends. Jim & Lena Andrews.

I worked with Jack Berryman when I started my OPS career with the Ministry of Education. I was thinking of the wonderful mentors I had and thought to find Jack. I was saddened to read of his passing. He was very kind and great sense of humour.

God Bless,
