Jacquelyn PENBERTHY Obituary

Jacquelyn Isabel PENBERTHY

(nee SOUTHGATE)

June 10, 1931 - November 27, 2016

Jackie passed away in the loving arms of her family as the result of pancreatic cancer at St. Michael's Hospital. Beloved wife of the late Robert "Bob" (2015). Cherished mother of Lynne (late Andy Ritchie) and Julie. Special mother-in-law and friend of Rick. Devoted grandmother of Nathan (Natalie), Cameron (Carolyn), Leslie (Mark), Joshua and Alexander. Great-Grandmother of Carter and Logan. An east ender all her life, she met Bob at the Balmy Beach Club. Jackie was an avid swimmer and began her career with Scarborough Aquatics, where she met so many people who became lifelong friends. With these friends she engaged in several other passions, including downhill skiing, tennis, golf and bridge. Many thanks to Debbie and Bill Graham of the Birchcliff Heights Ski Club and her many club friends. Her other great passion was travelling with her family and friends. She fulfilled almost all the destinations on her bucket list. Her travels with her Kaegudeck travellers were many and varied. A special thank you to Catherine and Harry Steele, who made there forays on the east coast particularly memorable. Jackie lived in the same home for 60 years, sustained by her relationship with neighbours past and present. Many Thanks. Above all, Jackie was an amazing grandmother, who loved to share her passions with her 5 grandchildren. She taught them how to swim and play at the family cottage on Crystal Lake, she encouraged them in sport, life, and attended as many events as possible with all of them. A heartfelt thank you to Doctors Rockman, Kortan, Headley, Hannon, Simpson, Ailon and also the staff at St. Michael's Hospital, especially Mary Allen. Thank you to CCAC, Paula and Nigel. A Celebration of Life will be held at the JERRETT FUNERAL HOME, 660 Kennedy Road, Scarborough, on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to a charity of choice. Very sorry to hear about the passing of Jackie. I knew her through friends and her daughter Lynne. Jackie came to me for esthetic services and I was always amazed at how she kept so fit and still was skiing in her 80's. She always had a lovely smile and was easy to talk to. My condolences to all her family at this difficult time.

Jackie certainly was a role model to all who knew her. She was so actively and joyfully engaged in life. We can only hope to do as well! She will be missed, both on the ski hill and at the pool, but she has left many wonderful memories.

My deepest condolences to the Penberthys. Jackie was such a sweetheart, one of my favourite friends of my mother's. Funny and sweet; I loved her laugh. Hope she, Carol and Bob (and maybe Jack if he's allowed?) are having some more laughs right now.

Linton Avenue will not be the same without Jackie! When we moved to the street nearly 20 years ago, Jackie was a welcoming beacon, always greeting us with a smile and happy to share stories about the neighbourhood and local schools.

Jackie had to be the youngest, fittest, most active 80-something we have ever known, constantly taking off with friends to golf, ski, head to the cottage. On winter days when we would be in the street trying to clear the ice clogging the road, Jackie would be right there alongside us with her shovel. She also took a deep and educated interest in her community and we regularly ran into her at local community meetings.

We'll always remember the last of our neighbourhood pot lucks this past summer when Jackie made us all laugh as she talked of her impatience listening to older people complain about their ailments. She was not one to indulge in self-pity when there was so much life to be lived.

Jackie was an inspirational example of a life well and fully lived and we will greatly miss her presence on our street. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

Dear Lynne and Julie:

Christine and I were sad to hear about your mom's passing. Please accept our sincere condolences. I feel like a piece of me has gone since I knew "Mrs. Penberthy" my whole life. Linton Avenue won't be the same. We'll choose to remember the many good laughs we had with her over the years. I'd probably still be stuck in Junior at Blantyre Pool if she hadn't taken the extra time to teach me proper strokes.

Warm condolences,
Dave.
