James Crawford Obituary

JAMES FERGUSON CRAWFORD Badge (4560) (Retired: Staff Inspector) With profound sadness we announce our Dad's passing on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 in his 78th year, with his family by his side at Southlake Regional Health Centre. Dad is predeceased by his parents Frank and Eve (Le Capplin) Crawford. Survived by his wife Helen. Beloved father of Jim Jr. (Terry), Joe (Lorraine), Tracie (Paul Major), and Melissa. Cherished grandpa of Nicole, Jim, Shannon, Ricky, and Jennifer. Loving uncle of Pat and Melody and Corrine. Brother of Pat (Eunice) and Bob. Dad will be deeply missed by his best canine friend Sandy. Born June 25, 1930 in Toronto. His early years were spent learning how to turn a buck in hard economic times by selling newspapers. In his early twenties he worked for The Hudson Bay Company in James Bay. He was awarded The Dow Award for saving a local boy and his dog sled team from drowning. Also at this time, Dad was given the name "MOOSE" by the Cree Aboriginals for his strength. He was the last person to see Billy Barilko (Hockey Player) alive. After his time in the north, Dad moved back to Toronto and began working for the Toronto Police Force where he remained for 37 years. His police career was highlighted by achieving the highest success rate for solving the most baffling murder cases. This led to his promotion to the Head of Homicide, and later, the rank of Staff Inspector. Some of his more high profile cases in name were Peter Woodcock, Ronald Turpin, Wayne Ford, Terrence Milligan and Vincent Fazarri. Dad also witnessed the last hanging in Canada. Our Dad, along with Herb Jones, were recognized as heroes for saving many lives during Hurricane Hazel in 1954. After which, a park, Crawford-Jones Memorial Park, was dedicated to them for their heroism. Upon retirement from the Police Force, he was given the Police Exemplary Service Medal, on behalf of Canada. He also received the Etobicoke Historical Society President award. As the calls come in and I speak to all my Dad's friends, co-workers, lawyers, judges, ex-partners, they all say the same thing: Your Dad was a very special man, one of the best, most respected person I know, a legend in the police department, a hero, Big Jim. Family would like to thank Dad's PSW Leslie who made Dad smile. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held at M.W. Becker Funeral Home, 490 The Queensway S., Keswick 1-888-884-4486 on Friday, June 19, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. A short service of eulogies and bagpipes will be held from 7-9 p.m. where everyone is welcome to speak. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Flowers are accepted or if desired, donations made to a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family. www.mwbeckerfuneralhome.com

So sorry for the family's loss.

The Crawford's were our neighbors and practically family for years.

His daughter Tracie was my best friend.

I remember Jim as a gentle giant. The most caring, giving person you ever wanted to meet.

He and my dad were best friends until my dad passed away. They were like brothers.

I would really like to get back in touch with Tracie to remmenice about Jim and my dad.

Sincerest Sympathy in the loss of your dear father, father-in-law & grandpa. Jim has left a wonderful legacy in each one of you. He will never be forgotten by the citizens of Toronto. He was one of the finest.
'Death is a heartache no one can heal, love is a memory no one can steal.'
He is now in a place where there is no pain or suffering.
We will all remember the great Police Officer James Ferguson Crawford was in the City of Toronto.
