JAMES ROBERTS Obituary

ROBERTS, JAMES PIERCE It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jim, at age 100, on March 28, 2021, at Etobicoke General Hospital after a valiant 13-month battle with cancer. Jim was born near Colwyn Bay, North Wales, on October 15, 1920. Predeceased by his parents Richard and Catherine (nee Evans) Roberts and siblings Harry, Hugh and Gwen. Survived by his loving wife Iris, son Anthony (Maureen), sister Edna of Sheffield, UK and numerous nieces and nephews in the UK. Jim enlisted in the British Army in 1939 and was sent to the jungles of India and Burma with the Royal Welch Fusiliers as part of the 14th Army (the fabled "forgotten army"). He remained there for the duration of the war. When the fighting ended he returned to his home town and began a series of odd jobs until he found permanent employment with the George Weston Company. It was at one of these odd jobs that he met and fell in love with Iris, who was working in the shop next door to his. They wed in 1950 and one year later their son Anthony was born. In 1957, Jim and his family immigrated to Canada where he continued his employment with George Weston Bakeries until his retirement in 1985. Jim had numerous interests, but his favourites were Golf, Darts, Trips and the company of his friends. Jim was president of the Burma Star Association, Toronto district, for a number of years starting in the late 1970's and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Thank you to the caring people of the William Osler Palliative Care Program and the kind and dedicated nurses and PSW's who allowed Jim to stay in his home as long as possible. Also, thanks to the residents of Lutheran Lodge for being so kind and thoughtful to Jim during his last year at home. As per Jim's wishes, there will be no funeral. Cremation has already taken place. A donation in Jim's name to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

We were very saddened to learn of Jim's passing. Both Iris & Jim were great friends of my parents, Tom & Evelyn Street, along with my husband & I, Norm & Margaret Tweedle. We shared many wonderful times together back in the 70's as members of the Downsview Mixed Dart League & going to various parties & dances. Unfortunately we lost touch over the years as people do. Iris, our hearts & condolences go out to you & Anthony. Jim was a wonderful man & great friend.
