James Telfer Obituary

JAMES DEANS TELFER Died May 20, 2009, in his 61st year, at Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga after bravely enduring a long illness. Beloved brother of Ian (Nancy) and Margaret (Ed). In the 1960's, Jay was an integral part of the Toronto Yorkville musical scene with his band A Passing Fancy and played at every high school dance in Southern Ontario. In his solo career, Jay wrote and recorded many songs, but is best remembered for writing 'Ten Pound Note' recorded by Steel River. Jay was a guitarist in the original Toronto production of the musical Hair and went on to become an award winning Hollywood screenwriter. He was the founder, editor, publisher, and typesetter of The Wayback Times, Canada's largest newspaper for antique collectors. In everything he did, Jay was quirky, headstrong, and loving. The many people whose lives Jay touched will miss his humour and interest in people and all things artistic -- but we will always have his music. A Memorial Service will be held for Jay in the Chapel at Turner & Porter 'Peel' Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy. 10, north of the QEW), on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Hunger Foundation (www.chf-partners.ca) 323 Chapel St., Ottawa, ON K1N 7Z2, 866-242-4243.

I met Jay in Los Angeles in the early 70's. I have never met a gentler, kinder sweeter guy. He had wanted to date me, but I liked him too much and wanted him for a friend. We lasted 30+ years as good friends. He endured so much pain these last several months with such grace and good humor. He emailed me two days before he passed and I had no idea he wouldn't be there when I called. He used to close his emails...Love to you.

Right back at you, my dear dear friend.
Love to you!

I was in contact with Jay in the last few years and was desperately trying to get a record label interested in putting out his unreleased 1969 LP "Perch". Jay helped me with the personnel on each track and you can read a bit about this album at: www.nickwarburton.com

The passing of Jay Telfer is a terrible loss for so many of us. His compassionate, loving nature was the magnet that drew so many to him.

Despite his multitude of talents and his endless creativity, he was a man of great humility who loved people with a passion. His family and friends were the most important things in his life. He always looked for the bright side in any given situation and his generosity knew no bounds.

We're privileged to have known him as a friend and to have enjoyed his company. When he entrusted his publication, the Wayback Times, to us three years ago, we were honoured to meet with his approval and will strive to always carry on in the tradition of excellence that Jay intended for it.

We'll miss that quirky laugh and the unique way that Jay had to describe things, always with his trademark sense of humour.

Our sincere condolences are extended to Jay's family and friends. It was far too soon to lose him, but we are so grateful to have known him.

I met Jay when I was 14 years old and hanging around the El Patio in Yorkville. He was a real inspiration to me. A great songwriter. He will be missed.

Jay shared many of his adventures with readers of the Wayback Times, an antiques newspaper he owned and published from 1995 to 2006 and beyond under Jay's Blog and all of his postings can be read here:

Jay had a way with people, music and words and readers admired him for all, including his fondness for his huge collection of VW memorabilia. It was a pleasure to have known the man.

Jay and I knew each other through Hair. I remember his tilting, whimsical smile and gentle ways with love. Just this year, he heard of some troubles I had and reached out to me, via facebook. We shared hospital stories and old times together via facebook and phone. Looking through his photos there, one can see how much he loved his friends and family, and music, and see the many talented Canadian musicians he interacted with.
With respect and sympathy to his family, and especially his grandchildren. He must have been a beautiful Grampa.

It was a pleasure to sing Jay's "Ten Pound Note" for Steel River. People still enjoy
his song on Q-107 with Andy Frost.

I lived in the same building in Yorkville in the 60's. Frogleys at 1 Yorkville. Jay taught me a few things on his sitar in I think 68, I think he bought a Rickenbacher 12 string after playing mine, I bought a sitar after hearing him. He was back then a guy I knew had many more interests that music. I didn't know of his later careers. My condolences to his family.

I knew Jay for over 30 years. I met him in LA and we became fast friends. He and I corresponded at least every other month every year since we both left the Coast. He was one of the funniest, gentlest men I've ever known. From his obsession with VW cars to his outrageous puns, he was a unique soul. Jay wrote to me up until his last week. I will miss him greatly. As the words he wrote says: "[he'll] still be in my song". So long, buddy.

I wish I also knew Jay in his glory days of rock 'n roll. I did have the pleasure of meeting him later when all things were "delightful" for Jay and we enjoyed perhaps quieter times and discussions about everything...Jay was so knowledgeable and always had an opinion. He was a good friend who will be missed by so many. We are saddened by his passing. Our deepest sympathy go to his family.
