Jane HUGGINS Obituary

HUGGINS, Jane Evelyn October 5, 1922 - September 6, 2021 Passed away peacefully at Michael Garron Hospital, one month shy of her 99th birthday. Jane was predeceased by her parents Roy and Caroline, brother George (Alice) and sister Betty (Leslie). She will be greatly missed by nieces Lynne,Cathy, Susan and Karen and nephews Lee, Roy and Ken. Jane grew up in the Beach area of Toronto, attended Malvern Collegiate and then took her teacher training at Normal School in Toronto. During WWII, when the Canadian government first approved females in the Navy in 1942, she enlisted in the WRENS (Womens Royal Canadian Naval Service) and served in Ontario and New Brunswick until 1945. In 2020, she was awarded the Bletchley Park Badge by the government of Britain for her distinguished wartime service as a communications technician. Following the war, she trained as a nurse and became a radiologist at Princess Margaret Hospital where she spent her entire forty-year career. Jane was greatly involved in the life of Fallingbrook Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities her whole life, including Clerk of Session. She was the second woman ordained as an elder in the Prebyterian Church of Canada. She was a tireless volunteer at the Bluffs food bank for many years and her generous spirit was reflected in her numerous annual charitable donations. Jane also spent many hours knitting tunics for babies in Africa. She was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013, for service to the community. Jane was an avid reader, traveler, quilter, gardiner, loved to cook and make wine. She was a modest, independent woman who was both respected and loved by her extended family and countless friends. Jane was a gift to all. Many thanks to the staff and residents at St. Clair-O'Connor Community Residence as well as many PSW's for their care, kindness and friendship over the past thirteen years. Memorial service details will be forthcoming at an appropriate time. Donations to the Bluffs Food Bank or Fallingbrook Presbyterian Church would be appreciated. Arrangements by McDougall & Brown Funeral Home - Scarborough Chapel.

I worked at The Princess Margaret Hospital for seven years. Jane was so competent and so kind with the many patients she saw and with staff, like me, who often needed guidance. Every year I place a knit ornamnet she gave me back in the seventies on my Christmas tree. And remember a wonderful woman.

I had the pleasure of working with Jane at Princess Margaret Hospital. She was a wonderful person who was extremely competent, level headed and well liked by everyone. My condolences to her family.

Jane was a supervisor at PMH when I arrived from the UK. Jane was a gentle, kind & skilled Radiation Therapist who took a green English newbie under her wing & mentored me well. Thanks Miss Huggins! RIP
