Jeffrey HURWITZ Obituary

HURWITZ, Dr. Jeffrey Jay Dr. Jeffrey Jay Hurwitz, age 78, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2022, at Mount Sinai Hospital, surrounded by family. He was a beloved husband to Evelyn, his wife of 40 years, devoted father to Cary (Sarah), Michael (Irina) and Gillian, loving "Grand-Doods" to Callista, Calum, Cece, and Nora, and brother to Gil (Becky) and Paul. Jeff was an internationally recognized and influential figure in the field of ophthalmology. His natural surgical and leadership skills were identified early in his medical training; first, in the late 1960s, serving on Dr. Christiaan Barnard's historic surgical team in South Africa, where human-to-human heart transplantation was pioneered; followed by his oculoplastics surgical training at the University of Toronto and Moorefield's Eye Hospital. He served as Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital for 31 years, the longest serving Chief in the hospital's history. He was promoted to Professor of Ophthalmology and he eventually assumed the role of Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto for 12 years. He was a founder of the Kensington Eye Institute and, subsequently, the Academic Director and member of the Board of Directors. Over the years, he received many awards, including the Lester Jones Surgical Anatomy Award from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Medical Association, and numerous Silver Needle Awards for teaching. Jeff loved contributing to academic research: his landmark book 'The Lacrimal System' served as a foundational text for numerous journals and academic programs, and he authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers and presentations. Jeff felt it was not only important, but also his duty to share his expertise, especially with underserviced communities. Given his membership with medical societies at home and abroad, Jeff was a natural fit for the role of Vice Chair for Global Health - Department of Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. He spent over 25 years helping increase the profile of Ophthalmology in the West Indies and around the world, building lifelong friendships along the way. Above all else, Jeff cared deeply about people. He learned to communicate basic eye-related vocabulary in virtually every language to help better serve his diverse patient population. He appreciated and treated equally all with whom he interacted. He had the unique ability to connect with anyone about anything: the latest Raptors game, geopolitical affairs, ophthalmic research advances, or reality television. Although he achieved great professional success, his truest joys were simple: playing bass guitar in 'The World's Greatest Garage Band', going on canoe rides with his grandkids, coaching his kids' sports teams, trying to outscore Evelyn on the golf course, exploring new countries and cultures, and using rollerblades as a main mode of transportation (even in the depths of winter). Jeff shaped the careers of hundreds of individuals and improved the lives of countless patients. He was always the first to offer a helping hand and the last to abandon a challenging situation. A tireless supporter who somehow never got tired. An eternal optimist who inspired confidence in everyone he encountered. A standout superstar who would rather "pass the ball than shoot." Respected surgeon, proud mentor, principled leader, thoughtful friend, exemplary family man, and overall steward of humanity - Jeff truly did it all and left an immeasurable impact on the world. And, boy, did he have fun doing it. Due to COVID restrictions, a private family service has been arranged and details of a celebration of life will follow. This is very late, as I only heard yesterday. I lived down the street from the Hurwitz family and was close with Paul. I remember Jeff as the smart older brother with a great sense of humour and lots of talent on the basketball court. Over the years, I heard about his stellar professional career. My deepest condolences to his family on his passing.

Jeff was an unassuming man so the list of his achievements both surprises and does not surprise.
I remember him as a friend, for a particularly challenging case he shared, as my physician subsequently and most profoundly for his warmth.
Truly, Jeff is missed.

Dr Hurwitz took me on as a patient when I had very newly moved to Canada from South Africa as a shy 13 year old. Having no lacrimal duct in my left eye, I had had several surgeries previously to insert a Jones tube and required another soon after moving here. I remember him personally walking me to the theatre at Sick Kids, and speaking Afrikaans which he knew from his South African days. I remember being quite impressed and quietly responding in Afrikaans too. Over the years, I saw him regularly and in total, was a patient of his for 27 years, with a few surgeries and many, many visits to flush out my tearducts and try to keep them open. It was never a comfortable procedure but over the years I learned to trust him and his huge flushing needles and it would keep me going for a few months before I had to return. I always laughed at the string of students that he would have come in to my appointments to see a Jones tube (or lack of) in action.
As I grew up, we chatted more and he always asked about my children and told me about his own. When I moved to Muskoka, he told me stories of his cottage up north and was always interested to hear about life up here. I was booked to come in earlier this year and was rescheduled when he became ill. I only found out recently about his passing when I went to book my next appointment. Its very hard to believe that he's gone and I will miss him greatly, not only for his incredible skills and his ability to keep my tearducts semi-happy, but also for the wonderfully personable doctor that he was; always with the biggest smile when he greeted you. A rare type indeed. Huge condolences to his family. He will be so very missed.

I am a recent patient of Dr. Hurwitz (having suffered a terrible eyelid injury while in Muskoka last summer).

Dr. Hurwitz went out of his way to see me as soon as possible and perform surgery.
From the moment I met him on that fateful day, to the several follow up appointments thereafter, I can honestly say, I have never felt more cared for by a medical professional. His sincere concern, extreme patience and his dedication to his craft were obvious to see. I will always be grateful to him for that. May he rest in peace and may god bless him and his entire family. My sincere condolences.

I worked in the Eye Clinic at Sunnybrook Hosp during Ann Sloan´s tenure and for 30 + years following her unfortunate death. During this time Jeff was with us as a Resident for , I think a couple of rotations, and then, when he graduated became a Staff Dr on our staff. I have numerous happy memories of Jeff , who was, everything described as him in his obituary. One of my greatest memories was the time Jeff gave 3 of us, 2tickets each to see Michael Jackson at CNE Stadium, we each took a child and Evelyn joined us with Gillian It was a memorable evening ! It was most shocking and devastating, when I heard last night of Jeff´s death, I will never forget him and just so thankful of the many memories he left me with.
My deepest sympathy to you Evelyn and all his children and grandchildren and rest of his family.

Evelyn
I played interclub squash with Jeff at Bloor Park for many years on Thurs nights. Jeff asked me if I would like him to be my Optho, I was hesitant and told him my concern was after the matches we would go for a few drinks and he had laser surgery Fri am's in those days. He pointed out that we always went to the same bars and he paid the bartenders to serve him soda water no matter what he ordered. He said if he ordered soda we would just brow beat him. He was right as always and I experienced many great years as his friend and patient.
He was a wonderful man.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Jeff's death. We were friends from the early weeks of medical school our connection, sports, lacrosse most years. We called him"the Witz" He was such an irrepressible force always with a quip ,a joke. Through internship at St. Mikes he made life lighter ,in perspective ,with his energy and enthusiasm. The same throughout residency when our paths crossed. He seemed like a life that would go on forever or at least a long time. Our connection was always close to the surface at reunions over the years. Many of us will miss him. What a great guy.
I give my profound condolences to Evelyn and your family

Dear Evelyn and family
It so hard to believe that Jeff is gone after so many good years of enjoying his many and special qualities. I first met Jeff when he joined the eye residency program at U of T and I was on staff at TGH and mainly Sickkids. His personality and human qualities were constant always, while he transitioned to oculoplastic surgeon and his role at My Sinai H and U of T where he shone. We used to chat during the time of my chairing at Sickkids at meetings and inbetween, and over cases and departmental problems. I recall the time when as university chairman at our banquet , pulled out his guitar and sang a song for his staff snd trainees. First time ever for a chairman to sing a solo like that !! We used to exchange stories about my son Nick with his band and Michael doing his music.
He had so many exceptional qualities that have been outlined and appreciated by those who followed him, his residents and now our leaders. I have been amazed at the great show of love for Jeff in their messages online.
May you cherish your many wonderful memories with Jeff. A very sad and untimely loss. My deepest condolences to you and your family,
Ray

Dr Hurwitz recently operated on my mom for a suspected lymphoma. He fit her in to his fully packed day to biopsy her quickly growing lump. He took the time to call me to explain how the procedure went and what he found. I'm a doctor myself and he went into great detail medically about what he found and his hypothesis. He took the time to teach me a little, all the while expressing his compassion and love for medicine. I truly felt she was in the best hands. My condolences to his family.

Evelyn and family, Gil, Paul and all. I was so shocked and saddened to hear about Jeff´s death. I have kept up with him over the years through Bob and more recently David and Sue. Though I have not seen him in years now, we did used to have good laughs about our getting lost together on a canoe trip from Kawagama when we got separated from the rest of the group overnight and Bob and Shep had to come get us and reconnect us with the group. Jeff always felt a little bit sheepish about that but we always had a good laugh about it. My heart goes out to all of you during this hard time. Marc VDH

Dear Evelyn and family: please accept our sincere condolences on Jeff´s untimely passing. He was always a most pleasant, knowledgeable and compassionate doctor, teacher and friend who had a great sense of humour and remained humble despite his multiple international accolades and leadership roles. I recall our most recent visit to the cottage where I helped him pick out a new kayak. The world is a bit more empty and sad without Jeff. May his memory be for a blessing. Baruch Dayan Ha´emet.

Joanne and I were very saddened to hear of the news of Jeff´s passing. Jeff was a mentor, friend and a wise counsellor. He was an excellent chief of the department as he did a great job balancing teaching and administration duties. We met in his office at Mount Sinai, so he will always be dear to us. He was Joanne´s boss for many years and she learned a lot from him. She has fond memories of his prolific academic publishing as she had to endure his dictations done while driving, attending music recitals and while eating dinner. Jeff attended our wedding and brought the house down after his performance of a very cherished song to the bride and groom to the tune of "The House of the Rising Sun". See the photo attached of him performing. Our deepest condolences to Evelyn, Cary, Michael and Gillian. It truly was a privilege to know him. He will be very much missed by the U of T community.
