JOAN HINKSON Obituary

JOAN HINKSON 1944 - 2014 A gentle soul passed away at Mackenzie Health, Richmond Hill, on June 26, 2014 with her loving family at her side. Joan was born in Trinidad. She was the daughter of Elvin Hewitt (deceased) and Marjorie Hewitt. Survived by her loving husband Leslie Hinkson. A devoted mother to Tracy Alexander, Danya Alexander-Gairey (Jawara), Natalie and Kamala. Doting grandmother to Onyka, Kai and Kailen. Proud sister of Janice (Trinidad), Dianne (Peter) Vancouver, Elvin (Glenda) Calgary, Dawn (Joe) Winnipeg, Derek (Linda) Winnipeg and Dale (Girma) Winnipeg. Many close family and friends have joined in mourning the loss of Joan. A career educator, Joan graduated from the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba. She went on to teach at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate for twelve years and later at St. Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham on moving to Ontario with her family in 1988. She was a strong advocate for students. Joan quietly thrived on the energy and messages of hope that came from the classroom and school halls. She tirelessly worked with her colleagues to refine the craft of teaching English and always felt fortunate to be in the service of young people who represented hope for positive change in the future. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A mass in celebration of Joan's life will be held at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 92 Steeles Avenue West, Thornhill, Ontario, on Friday, July 4th at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. A memory……
Recently, I was up quite late marking essays. I remembered Joan saying to me so many times, "Girl, I was / will be up all night. I have so many essays to mark." It's touching to see warm comments from her students. I'm sure Joan will be very pleased; they meant so much to her.
"Gentle," "sparkling," "kind," "inspiring," "beautiful soul," have been written here to describe Joan. Those words, and many others we can think of, beautifully sum up the person we have all known.
Dearest Joan, you many be gone, but you are so remembered; so still here. Thank you, dear friend, for touching our lives.

Joan was a beautiful woman with a lovely soul, with eyes and words that sparkled.

She taught us invaluable lessons in class, but it is the ones she gave me outside of them that I've never been able to forget. There are 2 particular pieces of advice she happened to pass on to me that have never stopped popping up in my head since our last talks 6 years ago:

1) "Wash your lettuce. Wash it!"

2) "Be aware of reality." It was my last year of high school and I thought of writing an article for the high school paper with pieces of advice that the adult educators in our school wish they had known when they were our age. (Call me cheesy. I was 17!) Those were Ms. Hinkson's words for me when I approached her, after pausing for a few minutes to think, poised, thoughtful, as always. "Be aware of reality."

She continued then to tell me a lovely story -- one of being a young girl growing up in Trinidad with her eyes, mind, heart always in books, who had hoped that love would be just as it had been in her stories... and one of becoming a young woman who learned a hard lesson that this was not the case. "Bring your head from the clouds. Be grounded in what is, rather than what you would like things to be," she told me. "I would have spared myself much pain had I done that then." For a moment, Ms. Hinkson, who I'd always thought of as impenetrable, superior -- because aren't all teachers? -- for a moment, my teacher had become vulnerable, open, a delicate woman heavy with words. I never did put forward that article, but that advice sank into me and has always stuck around since.

Kisses to an inspiring educator and a beautiful soul.
