John was truly a gentleman and a scholar. He also had bohemian tendencies and an impish sense of humour. I'd have liked to have known him better. We'll miss him around Grumbel's.

My first day as a "page" in the library, working for 60 cents an hour, a striking man with an afro and dazzling smile welcomed me as though we'd known each other all our lives. John soon became my mentor, adviser and confidant. I quickly discovered that John had a cult. A band of hippies working in the library in the 70s considered John their personal "guru" and no wonder. John was intensely charismatic, a font of knowledge, a deep reader, warm, and eternally interested in what we were up to. There was always someone in his office having intense conversations about life with him. John was an island of calm during the stormy 70s. He befriended and welcomed us to sit and "rap" awhile about concerts and films, advised us to return to university, consoled our broken hearts, attended our weddings and applauded our achievements. He gave great bear hugs too and loved talking about his first huskies. John helped me make a terrifying leap from one life to another. I've never forgotten him during these 45 yrs. I meant to get in touch so often. That I do regret deeply, that I wasn't able to thank him, again. He appeared in my life like a guiding light just when I needed one. Thank you dear friend. Godspeed.
