JOHN BATE Obituary

DR. JOHN THOMAS BATE, MD, FRCS Passed away peacefully at home on October 15, 2014 in his 83rd year. Beloved husband for more than 53 years to Shirley Bate (nee McComb) who passed away in December, 2010. Loving father of Michael (Lesley Hirmann), Lisa (Paul Cherry) and Stephen (Kate Kerr- Lawson). Cherished Gramps to Christopher, Hilary, Tyler, Jack, Casey, Julia, Benjamin, Jamie and Charlotte. John spent the vast majority of his life looking after others and welcoming newborns into our world as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at York Central Hospital (now Mackenzie Health) for over 40 years. An accomplished swimmer, enthusiastic bridge player, avid golfer and all-round "trained athlete", John led an energetic and full life. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him for his unwavering optimism, his caring for others, his undying commitment to friends and family and his fatherly advice over Sunday dinners. The grandchildren will always treasure their memories of lunches with Gramps at Gramma Dot's on Sanibel Island. Beyond his family, John valued his lifelong friendships from Oakwood Collegiate, the West End YMCA swim club, University of Toronto Medical School, York Central Hospital, the Lake Simcoe cottage community, the Richmond Hill community and Thornhill Country Club. Visitation with John's family will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the York Visitation Centre, 160 Beecroft Rd., North York M2N 5Z5. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Forest Grove United Church, 43 Forest Grove Dr., Toronto M2K 1Z4. A luncheon reception will follow at Thornhill Country Club, 7994 Yonge St., Thornhill L4J 1W3. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in John's memory either to the Mackenzie Health Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

We rise again in the faces of our children . I will always remember the last christmas we had with Uncle John and Aunt Shirley at my Mom's and Aunt Joyce's apartment. It reminded me of all the wonderful christmases we had as kids, this was most brought to mind by how uncle John reminded me of his Dad and my Grandpa to me the resemblance was incredible , thus we rise again. I always looked up to my uncle for his devotion to his family his interest in my life and my family . I will miss our golf games which we both loved , but mostly I will miss my Uncle John.
From everyone in our family to all in the Bate family our kindest thoughts and Prayers.
Love Morgan, Bridget, Mitchell, Stanley, Joseph and Charles

My sincere condolences to Dr. Bates' family members. John was my doctor for several years and delivered my daughter Elizabeth over 33 years ago. I will always remember his thoughtful manner, his warmth and kindness to me as a patient. He had the ability to treat his patients as though they were his only patient, his caring, empathy and compassion shone through in a fatherly friendly way. God bless you Dr. Bate, I will never forget you. When I think of a great doctor, I will always think of you.

To the Family:
So heartbroken to read of your Dad's passing. If he was even half the family man he was as doctor, you are a lucky lot to have had him in your lives.
From 1979 through 1988 he delivered all four of my children but beyond that I remember his caring, thoughtful manner. When billing for each appointment was the "norm", he told his front office staff to waive the charges for me on my third child. He just seemed to know...I have never forgotten that kind gesture. He will always remain a great soul in my heart and memory.

Dr. Bate was a true gentlemen and an outstanding physician. I had the pleasure of working with him in my previous role at Mackenzie Health as Director of Medical Affairs. I always looked forward to his visits to my office not to talk about work but rather his family whom he was very proud of. He especially lit up when he talked about his grandchildren. I will miss his warm hugs and comforting words of encouragement. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.

Dr. Bate was a true gentleman and a wonderful doctor. As an employee of Mackenzie Health (York Central) Hospital I knew your Dad as both a member of the hospital family and as a very caring physician. He helped me through 4 pregnancies and enabled me to have two wonderful healthy children. He always made time when he saw me in the hallways of the hospital to give me a friendly hug and ask about my family and how the children were doing. I remember one day he called me at my desk and asked if I had time to come up to L and D he had something he wanted to show me. He had some beautiful books that were gifted to him with pictures of his family. He was so proud of all of you and had a story to share about each picture.

I will always remember my last chat and hug this spring at the staff BBQ. Dr Bate will always hold a special place in my heart and memory.

My thoughts are with all of you.

Dr. Bate was my doctor when I was pregnant with my daughter in 1992-1993. He was a wonderful, gentle and wise man. I used to see him at his office on Dunlop. Lovely old house. My husband and I drove by there last week and I commented on whether Dr. Bate was still with us.... RIP Dr. Bate. Thank you for taking care of daughter and I.
