JOHN YOCOM Obituary

JOHN JOSEPH YOCOM It is with profound sadness that the Yocom family announces the sudden and unexpected passing of John Joseph Yocom on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the age of 70. Loving husband of 43 years to Suzy Yocom and beloved father to son Jay and his partner Laura, son Rob and his wife Julie and son Chris. Proud 'Poppa' to grandchildren Michael and Matthew. Predeceased by his father John H. Yocom, mother Helen Yocom and twin brother Paul Yocom. Survived by his sister Mary Anne Mahoney (James) and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born on June 2, 1942 in Toronto. Upon graduating from the University of Toronto with a BComm and MBA in commerce and finance, John enjoyed an almost 30 year career in marketing and advertising. Progressive positions at Procter & Gamble, Leo Burnett, Young & Rubicam, Labatt Brewing and TMP- Monster Worldwide afforded John the unique luxury of retiring early and allowing for a full indulgence of his favourite pursuits of playing hockey, fine wine, perfecting his 'world- famous' cooking, extensive traveling with Suzy and spoiling his family. Friends may call at the Glen Oaks Reception Centre, 3164 Ninth Line (Dundas) in Oakville, for a visitation on Friday, between 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. with a funeral service to occur on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 3 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.glenoaks.ca The family requests no flowers, but rather in the spirit of giving that so greatly defined John's life, a memorial donation may be made to The Salvation Army or to a charity important to you and your family.

Suzy....So sorry to hear the news of John's unexpected passing & loss to you & your family.
Haven't seen much of Johnny since our moving to Wasaga Beach, but his wit & charm will be missed by all that knew him. Loved to play hockey with him, & a funny guy to have on the team. Probably already signed with a team up there. We will be in touch.

I first met John 20yrs ago at Sun morning hockey and was fortunate to sit beside him in the dressing room for these past 20yrs..the hockey was o.k.but the interaction with John before and after the games was something I really looked forward to.I loved his stories, his advice, his jokes, the banter and his desire to make sure the teams were even(although they usually seemed to be slightly in his favor)..Sun morning hockey will never be the same for me..my left-winger will be missed but not forgotten....!

When I think of John, I think of someone who made friends where ever he was, always pleasant and interesting, his company was timeless and his advices priceless. John enjoyed great company and friendship especially if it included, pool, food and drinks.

John was a caring man, always taking time after the hockey games to talk to the little ones like my son Luca.
John loved talking about his family that he was so very proud of, he said…he considered himself very lucky to have a life partner like Suzy and such a great family.

John was always looking forward to the spring holidays, which meant more great time, great company and plenty of indulgences…what else do you need ? he'd say…
John could have been a great Sommelier…...” try this .…he said….You'll like it…! ......and if you don't…....I'll drink it….!”

Life to him was about enjoying the moments while being also well aware of others, he was always..always looking out for others, making sure they were fine, asking how things were and if he could help..!

John loved his hockey time, his teams were an extension of his family….he treated us like we were part of it….certainly on the lecturing part of it…!
John was also a great Chef…so he thought he was …hosting his famous team Barbeque dinner that he claimed preparing…! ....We all knew better…Suzy was the real Chef…!

John is a great lost to all of us, My son Luca will miss the chat they had together, I will miss his friendship but will consider myself privileged and thankful for knowing him.

Haven must be in needs of a great Team Manager to have called John back so soon…!

God bless him and your family, our prayers & thoughts are with you….
